The modifications in the health care delivery systems across the world have intensified nurse’s duties and workloads. Nurses have to currently cope with patients’ elevated awareness and complication regarding their health care acute and chronic illnesses. In spite of these kinds of difficulties, nurses have to discover methods to maintain their caring techniques. The Jean Watson’s caring principle may be seen as essential to nurses to provide a guide for patient care. “The caring can be effectively demonstrated and practiced only interpersonally and the nurse can apply these factors that result in the satisfaction of certain human needs “(Current Nursing, 2012, pg.1). The nurses application of the Watson’s Caring Theory permits the nurse to practice and adhere to a set of highly regarded principles regarding the art of caring. This philosophy coaches the health professional to practice the art of caring, to provide empathy to acute patients’ and families’ grief, in order to motivate their healing recuperation and self-esteem.
Theory Selection
The reason the Jean Watsons Caring Theory was chosen because the humanistic, spiritual and compassionate care of the patients. There are several core principles, kindness, the deep belief in others, spiritual practice of one’s self and promoting the healing environment (Watson, 2008, pg. 4). The theory of transpersonal care is one the reason Jeans Watsons Caring Theory is the best choice because it goes beyond the spiritual healing. The theory supports the moral commitment to care for others and the respect that the patient deserves. The foundation of love is a theory that in real life allows the patient to heal because they can sense that the love is genuine which contributes to the wellness journey. The senior nurse executives made a decision to standardize the nursing philosophy being taught at eight Chicago Hospitals. They made a decision for all of the nursing facilities to adopt the teaching and core values of the Jean Watsons Caring Theory (Rosenberg, 2006, pg.3).
Application of Theory
The first contact with a patient can determine the caring relationship between the nurse and patient. The nurse can protect the patient from hopelessness while making sure the patient has respect and dignity. The Jean Watsons Caring Theory teaches in a clinical setting, the nurse must treat that patient the way they want to be treated in those last days of certain death. The nurse should practice the genuine caring for a patient with the upmost dignity. In the hospital environment, the nurse should apply the transpersonal caring model to put the patient at ease. The nurse’s ability to apply the Jean Watsons Caring theory in the real environment will give the patient the opportunity to experience comfort, love, growth, spirituality, and respect. Caring science encompasses a humanitarian, human science orientation to human caring processes, phenomena, and experiences. “Caring science includes arts and humanities as well as science Caring science encompasses a humanitarian, human science orientation to human caring processes, phenomena, and experiences. Caring science includes arts and humanities as well as science” (Watson Caring Science, 2013). The nurse that truly believes in this theory will help find that harmony that helps the patient achieve a better state of mind.
APN in Clinical Setting
The use of the Watson Caring theory is design to teach the nurse the best nursing care practices to be applied by Advanced Practice Nurse (APN). Advanced practice nurses must be grounded in theory and research as guides to their clinical practice. The Jean Watson Caring Theory gives the APN the clinical foundation to work with physicians while help change the risk behavior of the patient. A large part of a patient’s wellness plan is based on the spiritual and mental aspect of how the patient feels about their acute disease. The Jean Watson Caring Theory teaches that patient care is about interaction between patient and attending APN. The patient will responds based on how the nurse delivers compassionate care with respect and dignity. The bottom line the Jean Watson Caring Theory can assist the APN with influencing a positive outcome concerning the patients risk behavior.
