Essay

The issue of “differences” is of significant concern for those involved in the criminal justice system. While all people involved in the criminal justice system are supposed to be considered equal in the eyes of the law, the fact is that there are differences for various members of society in terms of race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and other factors. The structure of society means that some people have more privileges than others, and these privileges must be acknowledged. White people, for example, have unearned privileges that are built into society, and may not always recognize that these privileges were not necessarily acquired through hard work and individual effort and merit. My African-American background makes me more acutely aware of these differences than some others might be, and I feel as if I have had to work harder to overcome some of life’s challenges because of my racial background.

Although the ideas of social justice and equality are supposed to for a basis for the criminal justice system, the fact is that inequalities exist. Ignoring the differences between individuals or groups is not an effective means of achieving a more just, fair, or equal system. It is necessary to recognize and acknowledge differences before they can be addressed, and only by understanding the nature of social, cultural, and economic differences can the system be improved.

As a young African American female, I have many memories of experiences that were shaped by the differences between me and the more privileged members of society. In order to accomplish the goals I have set for myself I have had to overcome many challenges presented by society, so I do feel as if I have earned my success so far. At the same time, I recognize that everyone who succeeds in life, from the most to the last privileged in society, has some help along the way. I am grateful for the friends and family who have provided a support system over the years, and I consider it a privilege to be an African American woman. There are still many hurdles our society must overcome, but I am grateful for the privileges I have today that were earned by members of earlier generations who faced even greater challenges and struggles.
