Essay

Introduction

With this unit, I have learned much about myself and my own ethical principles. I believe that there are significant opportunities for personal growth that must be considered in the context of my core ethical values and principles. Ethics are a critical component of my daily practice and must be part of every single decision that is made. I learned through the Riverbend City experience that ethics are critical to the sustainability of any community, and that individual experiences and values play a critical role in this process. The Riverbend City experience provided me with greater insight regarding the principles of managing a program using the tools that are available. My experiences taught me that achieving success in this type of program requires a strong level of commitment to the projects in which I participate.

Analysis

To date, I have acquired many decision-making capabilities that support my success as a nursing student. These experiences have been very educational and have engaged my interest in helping others through nursing practice. Community-based experiences are particularly helpful because they allow a realistic approach to be considered that influences practice objectives and an understanding of new principles that are applicable to community-based nursing situations. I have applied basic ethical principles in the Riverbend City simulation that support my growth in this field (Grace, 2013).

Through this experience, I have learned that the pharmaceutical industry represents a new set of challenges that impact nursing practice and how healthcare costs are measured. These factors impact practice settings and may compromise the ability to provide quality patient care in some situations (Ulrich, 2010). This industry governs prescription drug pricing and has much freedom in this area that impacts the average consumer in many ways. Therefore, as a nursing student, recognizing this problem and its risks to patient care must be addressed on a regular basis. In addition, this practice supports the development of new strategies that have a significant impact on patient care outcomes and how individuals recover from different illnesses. Therefore, new perspectives must be considered that support a balance between the needs of patients and increased regulation over the pharmaceutical industry so that healthcare costs are contained and patient care quality is not compromised.

Conclusion

My experience in the simulation provides an important understanding of the challenges of patient care and treatment in a given setting. Riverbend City provided many examples of decisions that require ethical values and sound judgment to be in effect so that the community might achieve the greatest possible benefits (Lee, 2013; Park et.al, 2012). This process engages nurses in positive decision-making practices so that there are sufficient opportunities to address widespread community issues with grace, dignity, and respect for all persons involved.

I believe that this simulation taught me to be more open-minded regarding different situations and to recognize the importance of putting patients first above all else. This is my key priority and requires me to be an effective communicator, a successful provider of care, and an individual inspired to make the right choice in nursing practice at all times. These principles govern my nursing education and will continue to govern my practice in the future. It is important to identify the resources that are required to perform to the best of my ability and to keep the best interest of all of my patients in mind at all times. This process is multi-dimensional and impacts quality of care; therefore, these methods must be appropriate and timely to ensure that patient care quality is effective and appropriate for all patients in the community-based setting.
