Essay

A personal and schedule must be similar each day for me so that a routine can become my daily work habit.  My new routine as a chief fire officer will consist of 24 hours on and 48 hours off in which I will insist that myself as well as my crew follow the following schedule: morning meetings (e.g. in which things will be discussed such as wage, caution, new equipment, things to watch out for in old equipment, assignment of new duties, introduction to any new team members, news of arson or other potential firestarters, winds/weather, etc.). Also, during these morning meetings the pledge of allegiance will be recited in order to enforce a sense of unity and because we’re a government funded program. In the morning and before going to bed, regular meals will be made in the mess hall by the designated chief. During the course of the day when no fire calls are made, I will make it a point to have my crew in top performance condition by going through drills with them, cleaning the equipment, checking the equipment, or letting them relax in the tv room or bunk area. Any employee who wants to may join me in exercise – a physicality that I find rewarding because it keeps me in peak performance. I will also encourage my team to write in journals as this clears the mind of jargon and unwanted thoughts and makes them better able to express themselves.

Managing time is difficult for me when the weekend is considered so a different avenue for scheduling on the weekends is needed.  It is during this time that leisure and relaxation are in order for most families, but with a fireman’s schedule being 24 hours and 48 hours off, weekends are only meaningful to the fireman’s family. Thus, time management takes on a new meaning. I have to be flexible with my employees up to a certain point because I have to consider that they have families, and that this type of job is a high risk job so spending time with their loved ones helps my employees recuperate and also allows them to be their best selves when they return to work after their time off. This is another reason why writing in a journal may prove beneficial as it allows a tension relief from everyday anxieties on the job.

Due to procrastination being such a difficult thing to overcome, managing time wisely doesn’t only allow for work to be accomplished but also sets aside time for rumination, family, and this in turn lowers a person’s stress rate because they won’t feel as though they are spreading their selves thin as fireman and can rest at the end of the day because that day’s tasks were accomplished.  Here is what my new schedule as a chief fire officer will like:

Sunday: 8-9 morning meeting/breakfast: 9-10 clean truck:11-1 lunch/free time:1-5 snacks/free time/clean gear/check pressures

Monday: 8-9 morning meeting/breakfast: 9-10 clean boats:11-1 lunch/free time:1-5 snacks/free time/check tires/check pressures

Tuesday: 8-9 morning meeting/breakfast: 9-10 clean house:11-1 lunch/free time:1-5 snacks/free time/check equipment fluids (e.g. oil, transmission, etc.)/check pressures

Wednesday: 8-9 morning meeting/breakfast: 9-10 clean bunks:11-1 lunch/free time:1-5 snacks/free time/clean gear/check pressures

Thursday: 8-9 morning meeting/breakfast:9-10 laundry:11-1 lunch/free time:1-5 snacks/free time/check ladders/check pressures

Friday: 8-9 morning meeting/breakfast: 9-10 free time:11-1 lunch/free time:1-5 snacks/free time/organize house/check pressures

Saturday: 8-9 morning meeting/breakfast: 9-10 clean fire house:11-1 lunch/free time:1-5 snacks/free time/clean gear/check pressures
