Juvenile Delinquents, Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 200

Essay

Police tend to express more compassion for juvenile delinquents than their adult counterparts. Therefore, law enforcement professionals struggle between their desire to perform their job duty and to contribute to the rehabilitation of these individuals. Furthermore, the personalities of many juvenile offenders may be volatile when approached by the police. These individuals, although typically aware of their criminal behaviors, become afraid when approached by law enforcement. Thus, it is essential for the police officer to expect retaliation on the behalf of the individual in addition to witnesses. The situation must be handled properly in order to prevent unnecessary violence. Last, it becomes problematic when police are required to rely on informants when dealing with juvenile offenders because to make arrests, they must rely on the knowledge of others to obtain evidence. Informants are more likely to withhold necessary information when a juvenile is involved because they are worried about the consequences that an arrest will have on their safety and lives after prison. Ultimately, it is important for police officers to carry out their duties independent of their personal feelings. Abiding the rules of the justice system will ensure that juvenile criminals will correctly be directed towards punishment or rehabilitation.
