The fashion industry becoming more accessible has as much to do with the factors outside the industry as it has to do with factors within the industry. It has not only happened in fashion industry but other professions as well and one of the primary factors behind this is the internet and the technological advances enabled by it. Internet has made it cheaper to market one self and get visibility. At the same time, anyone can quickly and cheaply set business operations without any huge capital requirements.
Fashion industry has also become more commercials and business-like. There was a time when fashion designers didn’t see their creations as business but more like an art and their production processes were inefficient and, thus, products were expensive. Thus, only few people could afford premium fashion brands. But now most fashion brands are being managed by corporations rather than their namesake designers who are more concerned with profits. The product cycle has also shortened which is why companies keep introducing new styles rapidly to cater to the customers’ preferences. Now customers play greater role in developing trends this is why there is now a greater demand for people who are good at identifying trends. To be a successful designer, one doesn’t need to be a design genius anymore for as long as one can forecast popular trends and respond to them in a timely and efficient manner. Even few decades ago, companies rarely worried about trends because fashion designers themselves would shape the trends.
Many factors have played role in making the industry more accessible and it includes the economic potential of fashion products. Fashion used to be a luxury but now most upscale brands have economical product lines as well and one could claim that fashion brands have moved from the luxury sector to the mass-market sector.
