Essay

Describe a problem, its nature scope and impact

While working for the marketing department of SeedAsia, a small tech start up, I was assigned the responsibility of managing a group of interns for the duty of back-link building to draw more traffic to the company’s website. SeedAsia is a crowd funding company designed to provide exposure to innovative mobile device applications created out of China and other Asian markets. The staff was mostly telecommute and located throughout the world. The job was a telecommute position which required I train the team in back-link building and manage their performance from a distance. The problem that arose from this position was that my supervisor set an expected quota of back-links for the team to reach each week, of which I was held solely responsible. While my position was a paid position, the team of interns were not paid. This created a problematic situation where I had to motivate and monitor the performance of a team that had virtually no incentive to perform on a high level. In addition, my supervisor was extremely stressed as he functioned as acting CEO and held a 51% stock share in the company from investing his own capital and was pressed to produce results in the form of new clients as well as investors for all of the stakeholders currently involved. Seeing as the company was entirely web-based, the responsibility fell on my department to attract both potentially new clients as well as those who would be interested in making angel investments within 3 months as the company was running out of capital to continue operations. The CEO requested that I personally direct a staff of interns to build-backlinks to succeed in drawing these new leads to the site where previous social media marketing campaigns had failed.
