Essay

The relationship between nursing theory, the practice, the philosophy, the history, the research, and the science constitute the knowledge base for nursing. The Knowledge Base Model in regards to the research-practice-theory relationship is represented by the blend of nursing science and research that guides the process, forms the questions, aids in the interpretation, analysis, and design to weave the facts together. The Knowledge Base Model theory in which is utilized in a majority of my day to day activities is Descriptive theory in which addresses the situation in which help categorize the meanings and observations that help with nursing relationships and phenomena. This is represented in a situation in which I had a difficult time trying to treat a patient. The patient was suffering in the latest stages of dementia, so she could not respond to my approaches in trying to care for her. Due to her state and her condition, I had to approach a new way in trying to care for her in which would satisfy the wishes and expectations of the organization and the family. The approach meant to find new ways to calm the patient down during time when she needed to take her prescriptions, bath time, and when it was time help her sleep. I found that playing music that might be familiar to her was the most comforting in helping her to allow me to care for her.

In researching new approaches to care for her, as well as controlling the environment around me, so that it would remain positive and efficient. I need to correct the way I was communicating not only with the patient, and team, but also her family that would create challenges in offering a the correct diagnosis and interventions for the patient. In my day to day activities, I have to find different approaches in dealing with the patients that have mental incapacities, which can create challenges, and frustrations. In trying to implement the concepts of nursing theory throughout my day, I work to enhance the research-practice-theory relationship, in which I actively research new ways in which I can interact with the patients and their families. As well as find new ways in which I can provide care for them.

The concept of a theory is that it is a systematic, coherent, and organized articulation of a set of principles related to the fundamental questions in a discipline. “It is a symbolic depiction of those aspects of reality that are discovered or invented for describing, explain, predicting, or prescribing responses, events, situations, conditions, or relationships.”(Mellis, 2012, pg. 29) The Nursing theory is abstract simplified view of an aspect of the reality of the nursing field that is intended for the purpose of prescribing nursing care, predicting consequences, explaining phenomena, explaining relationships, and describing phenomena. These nursing concepts that coincide with the nursing theory include family care, fatigue, enabling, caring, rest, mobility, recovering, healing, and comfort. While the phenomena of nursing can range from process of recovery to the revolving admissions. The knowledge base for the nursing theory is prescribed in the individuals’ history and philosophy, while also being influenced by the daily activities of the nurse. The nursing theory is not only a tool for nurse’s development, but a goal for the phenomena to be more coherent and meaningful.
