Essay

As described in the video “Kodak – Services and Nonprofit Organization Marketing,” the Graphics Communication offers a customized mix of services. The narrator describes the nature of their business, noting that some of their customers are using outdated technology such as analog printing, while others are using up-to-date technology such as digital printing. The Graphics Communication Group has to be able to fulfill the needs of all of their clients, and therefore offers a customized mix of services.

Kodak’s Graphics Communication group offers several types of services to several different market segments. The main segments that are serviced by the company are Commercial, Packaging, Publishing, and Transactional industries. Each segment has different specific needs, but generally speaking, Kodak offers “Communication Printing,” “Digital Printing,” “Workflow,” and “Consumables Services” to their customers.

Service Strategy Evaluation

Digital Printing Mix of custom and standard pricing Flexible runs and different size orders means that flexible pricing is necessary and appropriate

A-Z Grocery

It is difficult to argue that any business should be forced to build in a particular area or location. In the case of A-Z Grocery stores, the company claimed that they could not afford to open in a low-income area because the costs of security were too high. Because the company is known for selling good products at the lowest prices, it may be true that their profit margins do now allow them to absorb the additional costs of security they would incur in a low-income neighborhood. On the other hand, there are probably some decreased costs associated with location in a low-income neighborhood, such as reduced property taxes and other costs.

Though A-Z might not want to pen in a low-income area, the city planners have a duty to serve all the residents of the city, so they have an incentive to encourage A-Z to open in low-income areas as well as in middle- and upper-income areas. The city could do several things to make the idea more attractive, such as offering tax breaks for every store that opens in a low-income neighborhood; helping to defray some of the security costs, and even offering increased police patrols around the store. It is possible that with these incentives, A-Z might actually make higher profits in the low-income neighborhood than they do in middle- and upper-class neighborhoods.
