Land Owner Versus Prairie Dog Case Study, Research Paper Example

Research Paper

The balance of nature is something that cannot be denied. Not only does it keep the balance on the development and control of several species existing in certain areas of the world, it also tends to provide humans with the right amount of resources they need for survival. However, a lot of things changed especially in relation to how conditions of recognizing nature’s balance is considered by the modern society living in most areas around the globe. In the US, nature’s balance has been strongly affected by both industrialization and social progress. For instance, areas where prairie dogs are noted to exist are being sold for private ownership usually to farmers and livestock caretakers.

Relatively, these owners have their own personal concerns especially regarding the safety of their livestock and the integrity of their crops. Prairie dogs, being burrowing rodents as they are, are often considered hazardous to several farming produce. Relatively, this is the reason why farmers or private land owners in the US often find it necessary to treat Prairie dogs as ‘pests’ therefore driving them away from their own original habitat. What the farmers perhaps forget or at times neglect to accept is that these prairie dogs are vital to the tending of the land. The burrowing activities they engage with serves as a natural tending to the soil allowing it to be ready for farming or any agricultural treatments needed. To note, it is rather considered important to understand that these creatures are vital to the balance of nature and its capacity to make better produce from the land that is tilled through farming.

This is the reason why it is better suggested that boundaries be created rather than completely pushing the prairies away from the privately owned lands of the crop growers and livestock caretakers. There are other options available such as making fences stronger and deeper rather than simply pushing the prairie dogs away from their own original habitat. It is about time that humans try to understand that before them, there were those who are the rightful owners of the land and they should not be deprived from their rights to their own shelter where they are comfortable allowing them to function with their role in relation to how the balance of nature is kept intact.
