Leadership and Decision Making, Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 263

Essay

As I studied decision making methods, I realized that there is no single-best decision making method. Authoritarian is better suited to situations where leaders are experienced, visionary, and have a proven track record of making high-quality decisions. In such a case, consensus may not result in the best decisions and in addition, may also be more time-costly. Similarly, consensus method does have the advantage of motivating subordinates and making them feel valued. It may also be suited to situations where subordinates are high-performers, can be trusted to make high-quality decisions, and may know more about customers due to their regular interaction with the clients.

I did feel that objective decision making approach does avoid the trap of human emotions and it may also result in better decisions most of the time because it is based on data but at the same time, inaccurate data or misinterpretation of data may also result in costly errors. The advantage I see in subjective decision making approach is that it may be better suited when companies are concerned with predicting the future trends before competitors or want to introduce cutting-edge products that could transform the industry. But at the same time, I also think that subjective decision making approach suits to only few people, mostly visionary leaders such as late Steve Jobs and Bill Gates etc.

As far as Vroom-Jago Decision Making Tree is concerned, it introduces discipline into the decision making process. Even though it may be time-consuming but I like it because it ensures the decision maker has considered all relevant aspects of the decision making process.
