Smart cards are used across many disciplines. They have been applied in transportation, banking, and home land security as forms of identification and to make payments. In the healthcare industry smart card is known as smart health cards. Experts have said that smart health cards could improve patient security with respect to information storage in this age in which electronic health records usage is prevalent within the health care industry. As such, the advantages are immense (Smart Health Technology, 1).   With respect to planning and marketing of smart cards/smart health cards since it is a relative new business philosophy the process is now beginning to blossom into a huge undertaking as it is being slowly introduced and evaluated in health care settings.

For example, in enhancing patient information privacy and security, smart health cards act as a secured carrier of portable data found in medical record systems. They are encrypted with software that allows access to patient information only by authorized persons or agencies when applied to the data retrieval system. The system is designed with compatible software for smart cart utilization. Smart cards are different from magnetic strip cards that do not contain security encryption (Smart Card Alliance, 1).

Importantly, the fraud reduction rate is very high. One alert health care providers can offer when smart health cards are used pertain to fraudulent transactions. There have been recent extensive fraudulent transactions among medical record systems, especially; with regards to Medicaid and Medicare reimbursements. Smart health cards are capable of reducing these discrepancies by over 60%.  Another alert relates to security breaches in the use of patient records. This is achieved by establishing processes that are aligned to the smart health card technology and are capable of detecting portable record system irregularities (Smart Health Technology, 1).

Some electronic medical record systems do not allow ready access to patient emergency data. When a smart health card is used the process is facilitated. Compliance with government regulations is made easier when health record systems add smart health card devices to their programs. Usually; smart health cards provide a platform whereby the implementation of mandates is established since the technology can easily make system adjustments securely (Smart Card Alliance, 1).

In concluding this discussion, it is safe to endorse the use of smart card in healthcare services and beyond. It is a very useful device. Already smart cards in the form of visa and MasterCard have made their breakthrough in financial systems internationally.
