Essay
  • Identify the book you have chosen and why you chose it.

The book I have chosen is that of Larson and Chrislip’s book on Collaborative Leadership: How Citizen and Civic Leaders can make a Difference. This book specifically provides an understanding of what leadership is about and how it should be handled especially in line with the desire of serving the needs of the public. Since the attention is placed upon the application of leadership on improving the course by which healthcare operations are being considered at present. The application of good leadership as suggested through this reading is specifically helpful in drawing the line on what particular improvement is desired as the basis of new developments in the field of public healthcare.

  • In what ways do the author’s theories or approaches seem to resonate with your perspective of leadership? (The three different theories/leadership are listed below:
  • Adaptive Leadership- Ronald Heifetz

I specifically perceive Ronald Heifetz’ adaptive leadership as a theory of making a process of leadership that is better applied through regular practice of daily adaptation. In a way, it is defined as a leadership that is considered to be best applied as part of the culture that is being recognized by an organization. In the same manner, Larson and Chrislip defined that leadership is supposed to be a source of strength for the entire organization through establishing a proper culture that its members are supposed to follow. Like a way of life, the members of an organization are supposed to be taught how to adapt to the situations that they face every day.

  • Servant Leadership- Robert Greenleaf

Servant leadership is the process of leading that involves the need to find a more considerable way of giving attention to the needs of the people rather than to the desire of being able to direct the team or the organization. Notably, it could be analyzed that it is with this form of leadership that team members are given the motivation to attend to the needs of the stakeholders more than to actually get better gains for themselves. Larson and Chrislip notes the constant need of public leaders, especially those dedicated to finding better ways to serve the needs of the society.

  • Systems Thinking- Peter Senge

Everything should be organized and every leader should create a system that would allow them to have greater control of what needs to be done for the fulfillment of the goals that an organization is set to complete. In the same way, Larson and Chrislip’s book insists on the essential application of systematic operation especially for those who are trying to serve a larger population in the society, specifically giving concern to their most basic needs.

  • Select one of the public health leaders mentioned in this week’s video program or readings (listed above), and identify a leadership style (Situational leadership, Transactional leadership, or Transformational leadership) that you think describes him or her, explaining why you think so. (This need not be the same leadership style as in the book you have selected.)

Peter-Senge’s System Leadership is a sure culture that could help the healthcare industry a great deal especially in refining the process by which the said field of public service does create a natural way of reassuring the course by which the concerns of the people and how the government provides good attention to it is given ample consideration. The leadership style that basically describes Senge’s belief could be accounted for as the situational leadership. This being said accounts for Larson’s description of public leadership to be grounded on a system that corresponds to a situation that the organization or public entity needs to give attention to.

  • In what ways would this individual’s leadership style be effective or ineffective in public health? Provide support for your views.

Public health is a great deal of responsibility. In a way, individual leadership process applied in this aspect of social servitude is an essential key towards motivating the entire team in providing the public with the service that they need depending on the situation that they are in. Having an individual oversee the situation that public healthcare is undergoing provides a centralized force of operation that could serve as the key towards team-based cooperation.

  • What criteria would you use to assess the effectiveness of that style in that situation? Describe the criteria.

Assessing the results of the application of the leadership style based on a public response. The stakeholders’ [the public] value is what is at stake here. Notably, the instance by which the values of the public are properly responded to marks the effectiveness of the leadership being applied. It could be understood that somehow, the aspect by which leader applies his personal system of operation would greatly affect on how the entire organization shall operate as a unified team of workers defined to make the best out of their capabilities to serve the best aspects of public service as part of their professional identity.
