Leadership Style Analysis, Essay Example

Words: 405

Essay

Transformational leadership style requires individualism, motivation, high morals and ethics with a commitment to the mission and vision of the organization. According to Grossman and Valiga leadership is not an innate ability but one that can be learned and developed (2009). It requires individualized consideration, intellectual stimulation and inspirational motivation, idealized influence. I had the opportunity to witness such a leader in my organization. The Director of Nursing (DON) organized a team to work on streamlining the admission process and demonstrated transformational leadership.

In this particular scenario the nursing staff in an acute care setting were struggling with 47 difference paper forms which had to be completed for every admission to the hospital. The DON recognized the hardship and impracticality this was creating for the staff. The DON visualized the components which needed to be included in the creation of this team to benchmark and brainstorm a feasible solution. Through the DON’s commitment to the hospital and her realization of the need for various individualized input, she created a team consisting of nurses, nursing assistants, and administration with representatives from human resources to head the team. Through her vision of the vital players, she was able to recruit the appropriate individuals with the knowledge necessary for restructuring the paper process.

The DON’s vision was realized as the team worked to consolidate all of the forms requiring patient signatures and reduced them into one single sheet. A new history and physical form was created including check boxes to reduce the amount of time it takes to complete and can be used for both the admission and also the provide information needed for the minimum data set form. In addition the team also was able to condense the CAN charting to fulfill both requirements.

The leadership by the SON demonstrates the concepts of Grossman and Valiga presented in their book regarding the need to plan for the blending of professional and personal commitments and the need to be able to function and provide leadership in any environment (2009).  The SON demonstrated quality leadership skills through thinking of the whole problem and not just a nursing problem. By involving the keynote members from different departments to enable to team to recognize all facets, the SON demonstrated transformational leadership and a true commitment to the organization as well as the nursing staff.
