Leadership Toolbox, Essay Example

What Essentials Would You Place In A Leadership Toolbox As A DNP-Prepared Nurse Leader

I believe that DIP-prepared nurses have a special role in designing and implementing evidence-based practice. Thomas (2012) created a list of core competencies that DNP nurses need to obtain and develop in order to create better health outcomes for patients, improve compliance and safety, and increase organizational effectiveness. The main competencies I believe I already have, having worked in a busy maternity, infant, and women’s health care unit are critical thinking, problem solving skills, and the ability to obtain evidence for improving the quality of care.

I hope that during my DNP course at Chamberlain College, I will be able to further advance the above skills, and develop other competencies mentioned by Thomas (2012), such as transition of knowledge into practice, the analysis of critical guidelines related to my practice, advocating ethical policies that are approved by all members of the unit, and collaboration, which would lead to gaining information about new interventions that can be utilized when implementing evidence-based practice and patient-centered care.

Further tools used by effective DNP-prepared nurses are highlighted in the recent memo created by Jamesetta (2015) in the Nurse Practitioner are related to managing change. As the author states, DNP nurses can become change agents, and need to obtain all the skills necessary to improve the quality of care through sharing knowledge, disseminate critical information, and facilitate evidence-based practice, focused around patient safety, stakeholder needs, and efficiency. Therefore, I would like to focus on research and communication skills, as well as other leadership-related competencies during my DNP training, such as information technology, health systems, and the use of collaborative tools.  This way, I can integrate research findings into evidence-based practice, and improve the quality of care.
