Introduction
Being a leader in a globally distributed team emvironment poses certain logistics and cultural challenges. You are expected to adhere to Head Office standards and procedures whilst equally respecting the rights of others in remote locations. One of the main advantages of globalization is that it frees people from the constraints of geography and opens the market up to global work possibilities by use of the internet and more sophisticated communication technology. This was evidenced in the work of Thomas Friedman in his book entitled ‘The world is flat’ where he stated that work could now be relocated to any part of the world owing to internet-based technologies. (Siegel, J.S. 2006)
Other arguments against globalization are because they believe it will result in the end of the welfare state. Items like the protection of the workers, the interest of local communities, the environment etc. are all examples of what will be disregarded on the road to winning competition in the global markets. Others don’t accept this argument saying it is just the concern of the more affluent nations worried about a redistribution of wealth and more equity to those that have previously been deprived or denied access to the market place. The real concept of globalization puts the democratic model to the test.
Skills Of An Effective Leader
In this context three types of leadership models might be considered appropriate
Democratic Leader
The democratic manager is a delegator of responsibility allowing staff the authority to complete assigned tasks. Staff may use their own methods but tasks need to be completed on time, within scope and accepted quality levels. Staff are more involved in the decision making process and this is a motivator because of inclusivity. Note that delegation of responsibility does not free the Manager from accountability; the Manager is accountable for the end result. There is a danger that staff does not carry their weight and rely upon others to carry them.
Transformational Leader – identified by the characteristics of a person with vision, a strong sense of purpose and very goal oriented. He believes that people will follow those who inspire them. Hence goal attainment is by inspiring your subordinates motivating them by enthusiasm and energy. Working for these types of leaders can be a great experience as they derive a great deal of passion about their work and genuinely want you to succeed. Such leaders start with a clear identification of a vision. Leaders of this type are quick to exploit the vision by sharing it with their team. Such leaders are often seen to be using mind mapping or brainstorming sessions with their subordinates. The believe in inclusivity and the power of team dynamics.
Path Goal Leadership – This type of leader encourages and supports their co-workers in goal attainment by establishing a course that is both easy to follow and understand. This makes it easy for them to work and achieve their objectives. This leadership style would be particularly effective in a social services context. This type of leader has four key attributes that of being supportive, directive, participative and achievement oriented. This leader wants to work with you in getting the job done and achieving success. (Northouse, P.G. 2010).
In the virtual leadership role I excel in computer technology managing by video conference workgroups, electronic mail, use of technology etc. I need to develop in areas of empathy skills within a multicultural environment.
