Legalizing Marijuana Is Good For America, Essay Example

Legalization of marijuana in America is still a topic of hot religious and secular debate. Many community groups consider legalization of drugs immoral, while many others see legalization as a potentially positive policy step, which will make the life of the American state better. In reality, legalization of marijuana is good for America, and there are several reasons for that.

To begin with, America is fairly regarded as one of the most criminal states in the world. With so many imprisoned, and with so much money spent on corrections, there is simply no use in keeping marijuana illegal. In other words, keeping marijuana illegal is too expensive for America, because the American state and the federal government leverage and use enormous resources to eliminate what cannot be virtually eliminated. If America cannot prohibit the use of marijuana, it should legalize it, to reduce the costs of the so-called War on Drugs and to release resources necessary to reform healthcare, education, and other critical social areas.

Furthermore, legalization of marijuana is good for America because it is a matter of free choice, which American citizens must have. The U.S. Constitution protects the rights of American citizens in their choice of religion, beliefs, and interests, so why cannot it protect the right of the citizens to choose between using and not using marijuana? As American citizens, we expect that our rights will be respected and recognized. Even if marijuana is harmful for one’s health, the state cannot decide what we want to do about our lives, unless we harm others. This is a matter of freedom and democracy, and legalization will become an effective means to confirm the dominance of the democratic thought in the U.S.

Finally, marijuana is considered to be an effective means of alleviating pain in patients with untreatable diagnoses, but until now, a whole set of official papers and permissions was necessary for such people to find a dose. Given the seriousness of such medical problems, and the sufferings through which such people are bound to go, the state should be more attentive and humane in its desire to protect its people. Marijuana should no longer be a crime, but a free activity. Taxation of such activity will bring enormous profits and will show America as the state, which respects the principles of freedom, justice, and democracy at all levels of its political and social performance.
