Lessons from 60s, Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 277

Essay

One of the lessons from the 1960s is that politicians cannot expect blind obedience form the American public who are determined to use their voice to express their opinions as they did regarding Vietnam War. As a result, American leaders have greater accountability and are expected to explain the rationale behind the major decisions affecting the country in any manner. 1960s also taught America that despite military capabilities, the best strategy is often diplomacy and it pays to have strong international alliance in global political affairs. The power of diplomacy was especially evident during the Cuban Missile Crisis.

1960s also taught America that the society cannot make social progress until it treats all of its citizens equally without any regard to ethnic, cultural, and racial background. The decision by the courts established the fact that separate but equal doctrine cannot ensure equality and fair treatment of citizens. The civil rights movement also taught American public the power of nonviolence when it comes to resolving social and racial conflicts because violence leads to endless cycle of conflicts and it is difficult to win public support through violence.

1960s also taught America that the world was truly becoming a global place whether through political affairs, economic affairs, or cultural affairs. Americans started embracing cultural exports including British music and they started taking more interest in geopolitical affairs.

Another lesson from the 1960s is the importance of public investment in scientific research for both technological progresses of the society as well as igniting national pride. The human landing on the moon reunited Americans and gave the country a psychological edge over the Russians. It also reminded Americans of the power of human spirit.
