Lessons From Mayor Bloomberg, Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 283

Essay

Michael Bloomberg remained in office for 12 years and one would have expected Bloomberg to get better over time yet he made one of the biggest blunders just before leaving the office by instituting ban on large soda in certain places. The lesson for Bill from this embarrassing episode is that it is not the job of the government to tell people how to live unless they convincingly fringe upon the rights of fellow citizens. Government is also not there to force morals upon its subjects or to teach them discipline.

Another lesson from Bloomberg’s time as mayor is that no matter how influential you may be as an individual, you need support to get things done whether it is of those in the city hall or the larger public. Bloomberg often pushed his agenda aggressively in order to get things done fast but in the end, even failed to accomplish what he set out to achieve let alone getting them done fast.

Bloomberg’s reign also teaches us that actions speak louder than words. He made grand promises but failed to deliver on many of them. He might have benefitted more from under-promising which would have made even ordinary accomplishments grand success. Bloomberg’s reign as a mayor also shows the importance of continuous learning. What may work in one profession may not work in another profession. There is no denying the exemplary business credentials of Michael Bloomberg but he tried same approach as Mayor and failed. What may work in business may not work in politics and he would have benefitted more from trying to learn politics rather than overestimating his own capabilities to get things done just as he had done as a businessman.
