Introduction
This essay relates how cultural diversity affects relationships in the work environment and among professionals. It seeks to explain how gender, ethnicityand cultural differences impact interactions.A simple ball and sock experiment was conducted demonstrating how difficult it is trying to avoid the sock from getting wet as well as keeping the ball in my hand.
Development
Most people are right handed including me. An extreme difficulty is encountered when a right handed person tried to write with the left hand. Scrawls on a paper are the result and it would appear as though the person was never taught to write in school. The writing will be illegible. In my culture, teachers always discouraged children from using their left hand to write. Left handedness was handed over to me from the genes of my mother; being said that, it was clear how and why it runs in the family that such common feature among us all becomes the identity of the family. It was not easy to be different outside, but in my family, being a leftie is a common matter that we accepted as somewhat normal for all. For me when trying to hold utensils with my left hand, they fall because it is not a customary practice, but my mother can use both hands to hold items. Therefore, it is a very awkward experience being right handed and trying to use the left at any time. This is a sign of cultural diversity in my home environment
Cultural diversity and differences in the work environment are similar paradigms when examined from the perspective of adaptations and trying to live in another person’s world. Essentially, the socks cannot complete tasks the ball was designed to do,especially, when functioning as a pin pongmodel.Assuch, the very first thing managers and employees in a work environment must learn is to accept that we are all different. The places on earth whereeach person was born is relevant to what he/she is expected to accomplish in life. Precisely, it defines their purpose in the same way as the ball has to bounce and the sock holds it in place for a while.
The experiment taught me how difficult it is trying to make an object perform a role for which it was not intended. Also, trying to constrain an object is very difficult. In the work environment, many times we see mangers trying to constrain employees. They are placed in positions for which they were not trained; and so, functioning in the organization becomes uncomfortable. Soon it becomes obvious that these individuals are not compatible with their role. For example, in the leftie situation, which has been highlighted, right handers found it awkward trying to use their left hand to accomplish tasks. Similarly, employees who are placed in positions for which they are not fully equipped to function feel awkward.
Placing someone at his most vulnerable state to make sure he makes a mistake is a common trend in companies where employees are being setup for the sure loss of their jobs. It could be observed that somehow, the emergence of this matter helps determine the exact distinction between good and reflexive form of management. What makes workplaces the jungle of survival [of who’s going to eat and who’s going to be eaten] is the heightened competition among workmates that often put them at the most jeopardizing position. This is when different cases of institutionalized discrimination occurs when organizations have a preference for people from a particular ethnic background. In health care, this is quite obvious when visiting certain clinics (Vanis. 2013). Providers select employees who belong to their ethnic group and other people can never find employment in that business. If these people are employed, they are made to feel very uncomfortable. The sad truth about the fact is that because of stereotyping, people are being judged because of their categorical behavior and being instead with that of their capacities to embrace the possibility of growing personally and professionally in the business.
Conclusion
Being a leftie is just a common matter for people who have that biological preference; however, in a larger context, when dealing with matter of discrimination, it could be understood that such concept might be rather consisted with the idea of the need to accept the differences and the inequality among members of the workforce fully. Many organizations thrive on cultural diversity. This is important since it does not limit business to a particular culture or ethnic group. In concluding this discussion, it must be understood that we function in a society where cultural diversity is inevitable. In the same way as how all the fingers on our hand do not have the same length nor look alike. We are exclusive, but inclusive at the same time because we form the human race.
