Essay

Mr. R. Peabody

Head of School Administration

Any School

New City, CA 95013

Dear Sir,

Re | Urgent Changes required to the Cafeteria Area.

I would like to respectfully draw your attention to some important matters concerning the environment and hygiene of the school cafeteria. These issues are currently impacting the health and safety requirements of the area and the quality of services being offered. I would summarise the main areas of concern as follows:-

  • The cafeteria has reduced its standards of cleanliness, it is no longer operating on a clean and efficient basis;
  • The quality of food has deteriorated and the current system is geared towards fast food (junk food) and lack fresh nutritional produce;
  • There is only one Cafeteria open to serve the entire campus;
  • The hours during peak periods are restricted and need to be open longer;

As opposed to merely being critical I would like to expand upon each of these points with a view towards offering some constructive advice on remedial action. Further, I would be happy to evidence each of these points and provide any additional information deemed necessary in order to furnish the required improvements.

Reduction in hygiene standards.

There appears to be a lack of administration over the Cafeteria area. This has resulted in students littering the place and not disposing of refuse in the containers provided. In addition, many tables do not get wiped down and retain grease and food products on the surface. This contravenes health and safety standards and equally creates an unclean environment. There is a need for increased supervision and surveillance together with notices telling student of the hygiene standards expected and how to recycle and dispose of waste materials. This will help to reduce administrative costs, improve the overall image of the Cafeteria and create a more congenial atmosphere in what after all is an eating and relaxation place.

The Quality of Food

Obesity is a major problem with teenage students today and this is compounded by eating the wrong kind of food. Given the serious health dangers that this represents to young people we should not be serving up junk food. There is a need to re-examine the food policy in this area in favour of more healthy and nutritional foods. For example more fruit and vegetables and greater nutritional foods. There is a moral and ethical responsibility for the school to help in the health and wellbeing of all students. As such this should be a high agenda item for your review. In many regards this is not a difficult fix but a vital one in terms of improving student health and diet. More informative information should be published in this area.

Only one Cafeteria

Having only one large Cafeteria on a large campus is a serious setback. This is considered from both a logistics and geographical disposition viewpoint. It would be better to have three smaller Cafeterias’ that are equally distributed amongst the Campus site. An alternative might be to introduce adjunct seating areas that are serviced by Vending machines that serve drinks and fresh food i.e. sandwiches that are replenished daily.

Hours of Work

The current set up provides limited hours of operation in one main café area. Further there is only 1 café that remains open until midnight. This is a problem for students who are working late and particularly the library which is situated a long way from the main café area. Again the solution might be the establishment of additional rest rooms that are serviced by vending machines as these do not require the services of additional staff. There is however the concept of getting fresh and hot food in different areas of the campus; particularly during the winter months. As such it may be prudent to review this entire policy. It is suggested that you should consult with the Student Union in order to obtain a wider range of feedback.

I appreciate your taking the time to listen to these views and I would be happy to meet and discuss these items in person to aid in any additional clarification. I look forward to receiving your constructive comments as to how these issues might be addressed in the future.

Sincerely,

Peter Smith
