Letter to Internship Supervisor, Essay Example

Pages: 3

Words: 753

Essay

Foremost, I would like to say thank you so much for allowing me to complete my internship under your supervision! Although it was a difficult job, you made it seem so easy. Had I asked you earlier, it would have saved me so much time and effort. These past two years have been a tremendous journey to enlightenment for me. I have gained a plethora of knowledge and experience while working in the pharmacy. The Alexandria Health Department has been a great asset to me and my educational endeavors. This internship gave me the opportunity to do something that I am passionate about, yet allowed me to learn so much that I did not know. Each day was new and exciting. I never dreaded coming to work because I knew that I would learn something new that day. Yet, it was challenging. I remember during my very first few weeks of volunteering, you randomly asked me to list all the drugs I knew under the same class as Lipitor. I couldn’t name any of them because I didn’t know any at all. Today, thanks to all your help and all my time at the pharmacy, I can instantly name you all seven of them right off the top of my head. This is a huge milestone for me.

Sometimes I felt that you focused more on my weaknesses than my strengths. I remember very well during my very first few days of volunteering, you had me try all different things around the pharmacy: such as doing labels, counting pills, going up to the window, and sending patients to pay their copay. As I was doing them, you were observing me. I am sure you had to realize that I had trouble completing these tasks.  You never gave me the opportunity to complete those tasks again. I had hoped that you would do so under closer guidance. Although I had those glimmers in my eyes as I watch you and the rest of the employees completing those tasks, you never gave me the opportunity to try again.  I understand that a pharmacy is a fast paced environment, but when business was slow I wished you would have given me a second opportunity. Even better, as creative as you are, you could have suggested ways to make the tasks easier for me to master. I know that mistakes in a pharmacy can be very dangerous, but not allowing me to try again led me to believe that you had very little confidence in me. As a volunteer, not being able to complete certain tasks did not bother me, but when I came back as an intern and was not allowed to do certain things, I was really saddened.

As an intern, I had more expectations. I was looking forward to more responsibilities and actually doing more hands on work, rather than just typing in prescriptions. Nevertheless, you had me doing the same tasks you were comfortable with me doing as a volunteer. That made me feel as if you did not think I was capable of taking on more responsibilities. I didn’t even get to do a full pap application. You only showed me how to do one, and I never got to try it again. I expected to leave my internship with full confidence that I could complete any task with fidelity. I never got the chance to prove to myself nor you that I was capable. Fortunately for me, in the world of academics, I will be given the opportunity to try things I am unfamiliar with. Education is something no one can block by creating barriers for me. Although I missed out on a great deal of hands on experience, I am confident that I will be able to compensate for them through my educational experiences.

Overall, my experience was pleasant and the few minor issues did not hinder my learning. Thank you so much for all your help. I am well aware that you genuinely care and want to help in every way you can-I truly appreciate that. Thank you so much for your time and all the help you provided when I asked for it. I do hope we can still stay in touch. I am sure you have my email, but just in case my email is: [email protected]. Please accept this gift card from the new Restaurant Black Wall Hitch by the waterfront as my way of saying thank you. I hope you enjoy it with your family. Thanks and take care!
