Letter to the Scholarship Board, Essay Example

Pages: 2

Words: 544

Essay

I feel amongst the lucky few to be awarded a scholarship after a rigorous selection process. In this regard I would like the opportunity to first and foremost thank the entire board for this opportunity. I feel fortunate in that the career advisors and the facilities enable students not only do their work diligently but also make informed decisions concerning not only their future but also their present life and circumstances.

I feel that for a course to be pursued with diligence it must also be pursued with passion. Furthermore any course undertaken must incorporate my talents, my dreams and core competencies, which I feel chemical engineering provides. I feel that the course of chemical engineering is the course that will highlight my true capabilities, and it is the course that I feel I will be able to optimize my potential.

That said following the economic down turn in the United Arab Emirates the job outlook and focus of the kingdom has changed. The focus is now more than ever on value addition to its core resources vis-à-vis oil. One must adjust to these changes with a view of one’s marketability upon completion of their respective course. The vast majority of students from the region pursue electrical engineering. This will in the future create a superfluity of people in this field. On doing further research on the fields one can enter into and the number of industries that complement this course in the region are few.

The main reason however is one the Greeks called pathos ‘passion.’ I am passionate about the ability engineering gives an individual to innovate and to create. Chemical engineering will give me the tools to hopefully solve one of the biggest challenges of our time the environment. I will have the tools to work on plastics that biodegrade in the sunlight, to work on energy sources that could replace oil. I could even work in research that looks for cures to diseases. I will not be an insignificant spec in a cosmos I could be the spec that counts. I could find the preverbal fountain of youth. It is this myriad of possibilities that is most appealing. I could really be all that I can be and so much more. The fact that it is harder than electrical engineering is proof I am willing to put in the work. My grades thus far prove I am putting in the work.

After extensive research and consultations with my career advisors, I made the choice to change course before my commencement. This will in no way affect my graduation date. Nor will it be a burden of resource to the university. This is in appreciation of the fact that when awarding scholarships university resource use is taken into consideration. It is not my intention to cause any harm to an institution that helps its students pursue their dreams. All the members of the panel I am writing to at one point had a dream it is my sincere hope that you are all living your dream. It is my humble request that with your help and the guidance of my peers, Professors and my career advisors you will help me fulfill mine. Not to be a grain in the sand but the tree in the desert.
