Letter: Wishing a Happy and Prosperous New Year, Essay Example

Dear Uncle Jack,

I am happy to send you these greeting on this my Grandfathers birthday.  It is a time for fond remembrance of my Grandfather who lives so far away in China. Today he is almost 90 years old. Owing to the passage of time I have trouble remembering certain things about him. The pictures have gotten blurry. A few moments are forgotten, yet there are certain  things I could never forget.

My grandfather is a very educated and religious man. I have fond memories of how  he taught me  to write “Chinese Calligraphy” by using a brush in the old way. I cannot remember every little detail, just  the main rules. The basic rule, when writing Chinese characters, is to always write from top to bottom, from left to right. Further, each stroke cannot be too firm; it has to be just right in order for the ink not to spread over the place. Patience is the key element for learning how to write “Chinese Calligraphy”.

I do not have a lot of bad memories with the time that I spent with my  grandfather. I never forget the time when he took me to the pool and taught me how to swim. We changed into swim suits, and went straight to deep end of the pool. At that instant I was unaware that my grandfather pushed me into the pool. The water was very cold, with the strong waves pulling  me to the bottom. I drank a lot of water. Despite my cry for help  my Grandfather  did not rescue me. Suddenly I found the urge to  wiggle my hands and move my feet. I would not sink and I floated  naturally to the surface. The reason why my grandfather did not rescue me was because  he  was taught to swim by his family. My swimming experience was both scary and meaningful to me. I felt like I was stranded in the middle of an  island, with no help.  Ultimately  I figured a way of how to survive on my own, just like a baby first learned how to walk.

In summary,  my grandfather’s presence in my life is something I cannot forget. He taught me so many things in my life. The good contained in others is also the good revealed in you. You must find goodness  in others to see it in yourself. Although the pictures fade with time , the memories and morals of my grandfather will always remain with me. I really  valued the time we had  together, full of excitement and companionship.

I was happy to share your recent experiences with my Grandfather and I thank you for the lengthy letter and photographs that you sent me. I read your letter with great joy and it was wonderful to relive some of the many happy moments that we all spent together in China.  Although it will not be possible for me to see Grandfather for some time I was wondering how we might find a way to jointly celebrate his birthday.  In this regard I have arranged a family reunion party here in the USA.  I will be sending the details over to you in the next few days.  Most of the family living here have accepted and I hope that you will be in a position to join us.  We are meeting at a favorite Restaurant in Mott Street, New York.  I have arranged for a professional photographer to take pictures of the event and I hope to capture the joy of all the family together.  Then as a special treat we have arranged for a video link on a big screen to Grandfather in China. He will be able to see all of the family live at the restaurant.  All of the pictures will be sent to him by courier with a special birthday gift.

This is our opportunity to show Grandfather how much he means to all of us and I hope that this will be a truly memorable event for all of us.  I hope that you like my ideas but if you have anything further to contribute or indeed wish to make any changes, please do not hesitate to let me know.  I look forward to meeting up with you very soon.
