Pages: 1

Words: 253

Essay

 The population of Sunnyville town increases on a liner growth basis. The initial population P0 is 6,000 persons according to the initial year of records, 2010.

The amount of population growth in Sunnyville town is fixed and counts for 2,000 persons every year. According to theses initial information:

Fill in the following chart:

            Year (t) Population (P)
t = 0

(2010)

P0 = 6,000
t = 1

(2011)

8,000
t = 2

(2012)

10,000
t = 3

(2013)

12,000
t = 6

(2016)

18,000

Find a linear equation in the form P = mt + b (y = mx + b), which gives the population, P, t years from 2010.

P(t) = 2000 t + 6000

  1. c) Use your equation in part b to approximate the population in the year 2020.

P (11) = 2000 x 11 + 6000 = 28,000 persons

Use your equation in part b to approximate how many years it will take the population to reach 12,000. Round to the nearest whole year when necessary.

12000 = 2000 t +6000

6000 = 2000 t

t = 3 years

It will take 3 years for the population to reach 12,000 persons, i.e. in the year 2013.

Graph this function in MS Excel by plotting the points found in your chart in part a. You may also use another web-based graphing utility. Label your axes with time on the x-axis and population on the y-axis. Copy and paste your graph here:
