Ultimately, HR metrics create a cycle of success for a company. When the HR department takes on strategic functions, the business will become more organized. This will allow for the development of more effective training programs, which will ultimately drive profit. In all of the linkage maps above, it is clear that although some concepts overlap, they all eventually lead to an increased profit for the company. Organization leads to talent, customer retention, and more specialized roles of staff, which leads to increased performance. Increased performance generates more profit because it will attract more customers and expand opportunities for business.

To Dr. Amy

I think that providing employees with the opposite of a retention bonus is useful in some cases but could certainly backfire in others. A $1000 bonus is a lot of money for an employee to make depending upon the specific position he or she has at the company. If the employee’s salary is on the low end, I believe that he or she would take the $1000 regardless of interest in the company and find a new job simply on the basis that the bonus is a quick and easy way to make money. Likewise, it is easier for someone on the higher end of the pay scale to reject the $1000 on the basis that staying in the position will allow them to make more money longer term. While the opposite retention bonus might work in theory, the company will find that this will only help retain talent in higher paying jobs. In the end, the company might lose more money from offering this bonus than they would gain from hiring dedicated talent.

To Wali Rahman

I agree that it is useful to improve a business by improving the quality of employees. Because doing so can attract more customers and therefore profit, it is essential to invest in finding new talent and developing the talent of current employees.
