The book, “At Fault” by Kate Chopin mainly depicts how a very resourceful Creole woman known as Therese Lafirme. She is widowed in her early thirties, and she is left alone to run her Louisiana plantation firm. She later falls in love with David Hosmer, who is a divorced businessman with good moral values and strong religious background. She rejects David Hosmer marriage proposal despite his good qualities and this later brings conflict and the faulty relationship between her and Hosmer former wife, Fanny.  Therefore, the main purpose and aim of this paper is to discuss and analyze how various literacy movements and cultural impact is depicted in various themes, characters and styles used in the story, “At Fault”, by Kate Chopin.

Literacy movement and Cultural Impact Based on, “At Fault”, by Kate Chopin

“At Fault” by Kate Chopin is one of the romantic and love stories that depicts the difficulty that individuals face in the society in addressing their personal happiness and other social duties. The story was set and written during the post-reconstruction period, and this illustrates its importance in addressing literacy movements and active readings in the society based on women involvement in the literature. The story also depicts how cultural impact based on socio-economic activities and challenges and other ethnic and racial problems in the society can influence individual’s life and literary writings. The characters and themes used in the story also reveal some of the important aspects of women literacy movements that were common during early 1980s in the society.  The story also illustrates the theme of love and the struggle of women in the society and how this impacts their cultural activities and behaviors in the society.  For example, Therese Lafirme is a Creole woman and based on their cultural values she has to struggle to meet her social and basic needs in the society.  Chopin story involves the careful choice of words and language in this story in order to positively influence a culture of reading literary writings in American society.  Furthermore, the story also illustrates the southern pastoral traditions and literary movements of early 1980s especially based on women perspectives of encouraging more women literary writers. This is illustrates in the story by depicting women such as Therese Lafirme as strong and successful woman despite her husband death. Political issues, cultural ethics and traditional values of the early reconstruction literary writings are also illustrated in the story.
