Live-In-Nanny experience, challenges, How to overcome them and how they apply as a Teacher Assistant

Among the great feelings in life include going through a task or assignment successfully. In my experience as a live-in nanny, I encountered many challenges and some almost made me give up. However, with my dedication and diligence, I went through and applied for my status in Canada. As a live-in nanny, I had the task to look after three kids whose parents were always out of the house. Keeping the kids happy to the satisfaction of their parents presented me with a big challenge. They had many issues to deal with, and I had to ensure that they were alright. One particular child had a feeding issue and presented the greatest challenge. The child could only feed through a g-tube feeding system. Despite my lack of a medical background, I stopped at nothing in carrying out my duty. As a live-in nanny, I had to know many things and do them almost to perfection. Hence, I practiced a lot of care and caution in feeding the g-tube kid until my time to out came.

Apart from the children, their parents were a real headache. I was made to work late into the night, sometimes early in the morning and at times for long hours that normal. Here, I had to contain my attitude and practice professionalism in the job that I had chosen. Additionally, I rarely had a day off as weekends were a normal part of my working routine. In spite of the challenges, I knew my duties and responsibilities and always stayed by them.

Most of the challenges were extremely disturbing. Hence, I developed a plan to counter them for my stay to remain as calm as possible. For example, I could rarely raise my voice to object whenever I was being given instructions by my employer. Keeping my head low enabled the employers to realize that I was not the type to burst out anytime and without a warning. With the challenge to work most of the day, I scheduled myself in a way that made me know what duty to tackle and at what time. With each day’s work scheduled, I found myself most of the time ahead of time. For example, I could finish my tasks early enough, and in the process, I allowed myself some time off to rest or attend to personal issues.

Having moved on from a job, I am now seeking a new challenge as an assistant teacher. However, the experience I gained as a live-in nanny will play a focal role for my success in the new role. An assistant teacher has very many roles and responsibilities to attend (Groom & Rose, 2005). Among the roles are coordinating instructional efforts, giving extra help to learners, motivating learners to adapt to their learning environment and providing support to the children among other roles (Groom & Rose, 2005). With my experience in dealing with the kids while I was a live-in nanny, I believe that I will not find the role hard. Thus, I will use the experience I had as a live-in nanny and treat my learners, in a similar manner as I treated the kids.

A live-in nanny is not an easy task, and neither is an assistant teacher role. Coordinating experience from the two jobs will act as a perfect mix for my success in the teacher job.
