Luther Williams Field, Research Paper Example

Luther Williams’s field comes second compared to other fields in terms of its age in the country. It is located in Macon, which is known for its prowess in sports as it also holds the sports hall of fame in Georgia (Brown). The field was built in 1929, and it has been serving the purpose of baseball in the 90 years it existed.It has a large seating capacity allowing for 3500 baseball fans(Brown). The ball club of the Macon peaches Class A has been utilizing the Luther Williams field for over 50 years now to achieve its baseball purpose. (Brown). Apartfrom the Macon peaches, the Luther Williams field has also served the Atlanta braves as class A member from 1991-2002(Brown). Many aspects of the old Luther Williams field have been retained, such as the grandstand roof and the fact that fans still get to use the entrance made of brick and wrought iron that has been in place since the field was established. In addition to that, the vintage seats are still have been maintained by doing some painting. The whole LutherWilliams baseball field is still active to date, hosting ongoing homes for a particular team in 2007 and also with the return of baseball to Macon throughthe Macon bacon, which is an affiliate of the coastal plain league with the members of its team comprising of baseball players who are still in college that have the potentiality of making it leagues which are vital to their team (Brown). With regards to this, the purpose of this paper is to discuss the historical significance of the Luther Williams baseball field.

The historical subject conveyed in the exhibit is the legacy of baseball or just baseball in itself. The legacy of baseball is seen as the primary focus hence the name Luther Williams field.The late Luther Williams was the mayor in Macon who, when the field was being opened, asked the head of the companies to allow their workers to leave work early on the day because of the opening ceremony and even went ahead and declared that afternoon being on a Thursday to be a holiday. The name came to existence as an honor to the mayor of Macon (Oby).This field has been known for hosting baseball leagues. Other than that, because the field has a history of baseball, it has also been home to several TV shows and movies, for instance, Trouble with The Curve (“Luther Williams field to host CPL starting in 2018”), The Defiled, Bingo Long Travelling All-Stars, Motor Kings and Brockmire the TV series.Thesemovies and TV have baseball storyline where a character is portrayed to have a passion for baseball and will do anything just to succeed at playing baseball no matter the circumstance.

Regarding the baseball legacy, this subject is conveyed through the existence of photos and bios of the elite baseball playerspresent in the plaza.  Apart from the many baseball games played in the field, the movies and Tv shows also play a significant role in spreading the baseball history and legacy left behind by prominent baseball players. Additionally, even if renovations are being done, some aspects of the old field have only been maintained or refurbished. For instance, the seats in the grandstand have not only been maintained as they were but also a painting and sanding job has been done to enhance and prolong their durability and quality (Brown).

The purpose of the exhibit is the Luther William field since its existence has been to allow college baseball players to exercise and polish their prowess in baseball and host the baseball leagues.The college baseball players utilize this field as a source of motivation from the photos and the bios present in the plaza. This way, they also get to build their career life just from playing in this field.  For instance, John Odom, a native in Macon known as the “blue moon,” who was an Oakland athletics, gives many young college students motivation to perfect their balling skills to prosper in their baseball career, Russel. Therefore, the purpose of the Luther Williams field is to serve as a motivating factor for baseball players and enable them to understand the importance of baseball in Macon and the historical background of baseball.

Other than that, in recent times, the purpose of the Williams field has expanded to being a home for filming baseball-related movies or Tv shows that have a baseball background. Besides that, the Luther Williams field entertains the baseball fans who are watching the games as there are skits, performances by musicians, and several contests when the game is in recess or before the games begin.

Besides that, the argument that Luther Williams field makes about the past is that there was no discrimination when it came to the players’ skin color. Every player had the opportunity to play as long as they were talented. For instance, when Jackie Robinson played for the Macon peaches on 7 April. 1949, he became the first player to break the barrier placed in the player because of their skin color, thereby paving ways for other players with different skin colors to play (Oby). Other than that, Luther Williams field brings an argument about the durability and the quality of building materials, showing us that the materials used in building the field were ofoutstanding quality for it to stay for the past 90 years. This is seen with the vintage seats, and the gateway made of wrought iron and brick is still in place with some bit of renovations made to polish their quality and appearances. Additionally, from the Luther Williams field, we gather that sports were taken seriously and given priority in schools and colleges, which is still current.

The target audience of the Luther Williams field is the college students and the population that is inclined to sports. The college bats, high school teams in private and public schools and colleges, and the sports professionals and organizers. This field makes sense primarily to individuals who have a baseball passion and the administration of a country regarding sports. The country’s administration will ensure that, when it comes to sports matters, the players are well taken care of, and even the facilities have been maintained and prepared for the games to take place. On the other hand, the players use the field to practice and prepare well for the competition. For instance, when the league championships are about to occur, the teams that are to compete kickstart their practice sessions. These baseballteams include Phillies, the Dodgers, Pirates, the Braves, Tigers, and the Reds (Oby). Therefore, these teams, mainly populated by young people, remain the main target audience for the Luther Williams field exhibition. This is because the young people in high schools and colleges are the most engaged in building a career in baseball.

From the argument that the Luther Williams field exhibition makes, the people who are likely to be persuaded are the baseball fans, the players, education facilities that are high schools and colleges, and the government. This is because of the argument that there was no discrimination of players in the past because their skin color mainly affects the players. Hence, the baseball players in the current world would back up search arguments as it is evident that there is no discrimination when it comes to participating in baseball. Additionally, the education facilities will be persuaded to ensure no discrimination in their institutions, be it in the classes or the sports teams. This way, the institution’s integrity is upheld. Governments will be persuaded to continue high-quality materials and labor to establish facilities that will positively impact its citizens to ensure that these facilities offer their services long without requiring frequent renovations.

Governments will also ensure that sport in schools is also given priority as the other subjects. This way, a balance is found between education and sports. In addition to that, the governments will also be persuaded to offer more sports holidays, for the citizens to offer their respect to the sports champions, as did the Macon mayor Luther Williams. He declared an afternoon holiday that allowed individuals from his area of jurisdiction to attend the opening ceremony of the field named after him.  All in all, those baseball enthusiasts will be more persuaded to concentrate on their baseball career paths just from looking at and reading the exhibition on the Luther Williams field; hence there will be an increased number of individuals who are interested in advancing their career by specializing in the baseball career after gaining some motivation from the exhibition.

The context of the Luther Williams field exhibit that convinces me of its purpose of motivating the college baseball players to specialize in a baseball career was the existence of the bios and photos of the legendary players in the plaza such as Vince Coleman Jermaine Dye, Andruw Jones, And Chipper Jones. When players pass by the plaza, they are reminded that they can also achieve their baseball dreams and surpass existing records, as did VinceColeman. Other than that, the existence of a large capacity that can carry up to 3500 people and the vintage seats showed the entertainment purpose of the field. Apart from that, the existence of a vintage backdrop utilized by filmmakers whenever they want to make vintage baseball tv shows or movies also confirms the entertainment purpose of the field. For instance, in the filming of undefiled where there is an actor who used to be a professional baseball player in real life known as Bradford Hayes plays the role of a baseball player who faces challenges in his life, affecting his baseball career.

Additionally, its proximity to top restaurants in Macon and other physical attractions makes it convenient to achieve its entertainment and motivation purpose. The needs of both the players and the fans will be satisfied.Therefore, it is safe to say that most of the features of the Luther Williams field play an essential role in achieving its purpose as seen above, thereby convincing me that the field can achieve its objectives without any hindrances as all of its features, both internal and external environment work seamlessly to achieve its purposes.

Apart from that, the Luther Williams field does reflect a sound historical scholarship in that there are references to all the back dates from the establishment of the facilities up to the present time. The chronology of events is quite detailed. Additionally, the materials used to build the field, such as brick and wrought iron, signify building materials used in the ancient years. Additionally, the fact that the seats in the field were vintage, even the brick entrance that was left, signifies the design in which the ancient people had preferred that is the castle-like structurethat serves as the entrance to the field.In addition to that, the vintage backdrop that is used in the production of baseball based tv shows or movies have been made the whole exhibition, reflect upon the historical events that had happened in the past and how they were recorded and stored show the right chronology and accountability of the historical evolution.

Besides that, the Luther Williams field does employ an appropriate use and mix of artifacts, images, narratives, and other sources of material. This is because we see the use of images of the past players that are present in the plaza together with their biography that serves as a motivating factor to the upcoming baseball legends. Additionally, the use of bricks formed the gate that is still used for entry to date. Also, the wrought iron in the gates and the name of the field that is seen at the top of the brick gate represent the materials used for the establishment of the Luther Williams field. With the recent renovations that have been made to the field, such as the transformation of one of the concessions stands that existed into a team store, bathrooms and the seats have been refurbished and an additionally picnic space that is available to hold 25 people where they can enjoy meals before the game starts (Gambill).  All of the additional renovations bring a perfect mix of the artifacts and other sources of materials utilized in the field to ensure that the players, the staff, and the fans are well catered for, thereby upholding the relevance of the field (Gambill). Therefore, the mixture of all these elements brings a positive vibe to the players and the baseball fans at large.

The design of the Luther Williams field is effective in that it allows room for renovations that are being by the local authorities present in Macon. Other than that, the design also allows for the grandstands to be fully covered, thereby ensuring that fans are protected from extreme weather conditions. Other than that, the design of the field has allowed for the establishment of a larger sitting capacity for baseball fans. Therefore, the flexibility of the design has a positive impact on the effectiveness of the field because it allows room for refurbishments instead of bringing down the whole place and starting the building work again.

We can conclude that the design and the history behind the field make it highly competitive and the most sought-afterfield for sports and entertainment reasons. This gives the field a competitive advantage over the other fields. Other than that, the Luther Williams field achieves its purpose by allowing college bats to practice in the field, making them ready for the baseball leagues that are also carried out in the same field. Other than being a motivation to upcoming baseball players, the field has attained its entertainment purpose by allowing the filming of TV shows and movies that utilize not only the backdrop that’s vintage but also the entire environment of the field. In addition to that, with the new renovations, there have been increased entertainment areas such as the picnic areas, expansion of concessions that were present to include more areas for preparing food, a food stand that is portable, and a new beer corner. These additional improvements have made the experience of watching baseball worthwhile because the baseball fans remain satisfied while the service providers also gain from the whole sporting event. This way, everybody gains whenever there are baseball matches; hence the field ends up achieving its purpose.

In conclusion, I feel like the Luther Williams field exhibition was quite satisfactory as nothing was left out. All information was well described and in order from the existence of the field up to the current state of the field. There was the use of images, and even biographies of the baseball legends and the image of how the field was like in the past and how it will look after the renovations will be done. Therefore, we can conclude that the Luther Williams field exhibition has a historical significance to the lives of people who trace their race to the legendsof baseball, those aspiring to be like the baseball legends, and the baseball supporters at large. Luther William’s field exhibition has brought awareness of the stone age and the iron age, which is seen at the entrance of the field as the gate made of bricks and iron. Moreover, with the renovations that are being incorporated in the Luther Williams field, its relevance will be highly maintained, and that even the owner of the field name will be proud of how their legacy lives on even without them being available.
