Essay

For my paper I chose Major General (retired) Kathryn G. Frost who retired when she was in the position of commander of the United States Army and Air Force exchange service a job she took back in 2002. By the time when she was retiring, Kathryn had the highest rank than any other woman in the United States Army at that time and was the wife of a former Representative from Texas by the name Martin Frost. One unfortunate thing about this courageous lady is that she was diagnosed with breast cancer a month before she took a post at the AAFES. According to her, the military training she had received helped her in fighting with the disease (Holley, 2006).

Kathryn was in the Army for thirty-one years and was at one time an Adjutant General of the United States Army for four years a job she did simultaneously with being the commander of the Physical Disability Agency, being the Director of the U.S. Army Postal Service agency and also as the commander of the Eastern Sector of the military entrance processing command. Kathryn took the job of an adjutant general in 1998 and stayed for four years. A major role she played during this time was dealing with notifications of the casualties of the 9/11 attack on the Pentagon (Arlington Cemetery, 2006).

During her time in the military, Major General Kathryn Frost was a role model for soldiers as well as military leaders. As an Adjutant General of the United States Army, she worked hard to better personnel policies and brought about education and leadership innovations in the Army. She was a person of great expertise and vision and this will go a long way in benefiting the Adjutant General Corps (Frost, 2006).

Major General Kathryn Frost was a proud winner of many awards during her career as the Adjutant General of the United States Army. Some of these included Distinguished Service Medal, the Defense Superior Medal, the Legion of Merit and the Army Commendation Award. Apart from being an Adjutant General of the United States Army, Major General Kathryn Frost went to Berlin on duty for two years, was a social aide in the White House for several years, and was a congressional liaison person for Gen. Colin Powell at the time when he was chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. To become a general officer, Major General Kathryn Frost had to pass through the Army War College and the Command and General Staff School and she courageously completed the two courses (Frost, 2006).

The reason for choosing Major General Kathryn Frost is what she told the Miami Herald in 2003 that she joined the Army because the officers she had counseled in terms of how they lived their lives when on duty and when off duty. She wanted to prove feminists wrong and the enemies of feminism right. She said that women were always asking for equal rights but did not go ahead to ask for equal responsibility. She continued to say that in order for commitment to be achieved, there has to be sacrifice and success comes after establishing priorities and making choices.
