Making a Mark as a Dnp Leader, Essay Example

Working in a busy maternity, infant care, and women’s health services unit, I often come across obstacles to deliver great service for all patients. The main concern in my unit is nursing shortage, and patient engagement. When women attend the clinic, they are in an emotionally vulnerable state, and nurses need to build trust to find out about patients’ individual values, preferences, and concerns, in order to implement evidence-based, patient-centered care. Below I would like to highlight some of the steps I would like to take as a DNP leader to make that possible.

Tilden et al. (2014) highlight the importance of educating women about their options to prevent poor perinatal outcomes, and implementing an evidence-based interpersonal communication. For this initiative, I would like to review related studies and research, and design a patient engagement education for the nursing team to hold patient education sessions in group setting. As Tilden et al. (2014,) state, randomized trials confirmed greater patient satisfaction, a reduction of Cesarian Section interventions, and premature births among women who took part in group education.

Another area I would like to focus on as a DNP nurse is to adjust staffing schedules and rotas, as well as competencies to patients’ needs. Simon et al. (2014) mentions several interventions that can improve staffing levels in hospitals and positively impact patient outcomes, such as employee engagement through training, staff engagement, and advanced individual appraisals that focus on nurses’ development areas, career goals, and training needs. Therefore, I would like to create staffing plans based on patient needs, and empower individual nurses to take responsibility for their professional development, and time management. Reducing absenteeism would improve staff availability, while patient education would decrease nurses’ workload, by empowering patients to manage their health better.
