This article informed me that malaria is a disease that is transmitted primarily through mosquitos. There are several species of mosquito that are capable of carrying the parasite that cause the disease. It is possible to prevent the spread of this deadly disease by limiting the number of mosquitos available in the environment in addition to limiting their contact with people. It is possible that malaria intervention programs would also be helpful to assist with this effort. Of primary importance, we must monitor individuals with additional diseases, such as HIV and AIDS, as the symptoms will manifest themselves in a more serious form in these patients.
While the information that was presented in this article was interesting, it would have been more beneficial for them to discuss the disease treatment process. Combination based therapy appears valuable, but providing more information about the individual drugs would help to provide better insight into what medications would be given to different patients on the basis of their symptoms. Furthermore, it appears that malaria is resistant to many of the drugs that are commonly used, so it may be useful to treat these patients in the same manner that many cancer patients are treated. For example, if a certain drug combination is not working, it would be useful to switch to a different combination. The article did not go into specifics concerning the advantages of the individual drugs so we cannot predict what will happen when they are combined.
Something that is transgenerational is passed down from generation to generation to generation. This is related to anthropology because both cultures and genetic traits are passed down in this manner. It is related to the article because health is a cultural value that is passed from generation to generation. Forensic anthropology is the application of anthropological principles when studying law. This is important because it helps criminologists piece together information about crimes. It can be used to provide evidence to scientists concerning the impacts of malaria. Dead bodies can be examined for this purpose. Adaptation is the ability of organisms to cope with their environment, enhancing survival. This is important to anthropology because it helps scientists understand why people act and behave certain ways based on their ancestry. Acclimization is the process by which organisms adjust to gradual changes in their environment. This applies to the field of anthropology for the same reason as adaptation. It helps scientists understand why traits have changed over time. For both of these cases, science can determine how individuals have become immune to the disease or have been able to suffer from less severe cases due to biological factors.
A chapter 12 vocabulary word is hypoxia, which means a lack of oxygen. This is related to malaria, because some individuals with the disease stop breathing and die. A second chapter 12 vocabulary word is endemic, which when a disease is typically found in a certain area. This is relevant for malaria because it is found in the tropical parts of Africa. A chapter 13 word is essential amino acids, which are the minimum 6 amino acids needed by the body for survival. This is related to malaria because individuals that do not have these amino acids are more likely to become susceptible to the disease. A second chapter 13 word is senescence, which is what happens to cells when they age. They stop growing. Cells that have reached this state will not transmit malaria to other cells as rapidly because they will not replicate. A chapter 14 vocabulary term is development, which is cell differentiation. It is relevant because the disease can only impact cells with a certain differentiation. Another vocabulary word is sexual dimorphism, which is the difference between males and females. This is related to the disease because malaria impacts males and females disproportionately.
