Male and Female Genitalia, Essay Example

Essay

April 5th was a productive day when models helped me learn about EVMS. I am glad to have benefitted from the experience. Both male and female models were quite helpful in helping me conduct exams of male and female genitalia.

Katherine taught us how we can make patients comfortable during examination. She specifically mentioned we call linen “drapes” instead of sheets. Similarly, she told us to call table “examination table” instead of bed. Katherine explained these terms help make the female patients feel more relaxed and at ease. I believe Katherine did a good job of providing this information and I also like the fact that these terminologies are kind of self-explanatory and, thus, easy to remember.

Next, Katherine addressed female anatomy. She guided us to locations of various female organs such as ovaries, clitoris, labia minora and majora. Even though most of the students in the class were girls, I suspect some including me might have been embarrassed to admit that we didn’t know the exact location of all female reproductive organs such as the ovaries. Thus, learning about organs through the assistance of a real-life model significantly enhanced the learning process.

During pelvic examination under Katherine’s supervision, I did not palpate any abnormalities along the lower abdominal cavity even though the subject claimed to have a history of fibroids.  We also got the chance to familiarize ourselves with speculum and use it to see a normal cervix. This exercise will be greatly beneficial to me during my professional career as a nurse practitioner. While examining the vagina, I was able to observe different structures. Katherine also introduced us to variations in female anatomical structures. She reminded us not everyone’s anatomical positioning of the cervix is same and some run more laterally instead of as a midline. Katherine demonstrated that when we insert speculum we may get a midline view of the cervix and depending on the insertion technique, it may be positioned more laterally.

I also value the opportunity to examine male genitalia. I learned how to properly inspect and palpate the shaft of the penis by pushing the foreskin back and palpating the penis for any nodules. I also learned how to check the meatus of the penis for abnormal colored drainage. Similarly, it is also important to inspect genital hair for infestations.

We also did a prostate exam during which I learned what it feels like to palpate a hemorrhoid. As a result, I will be able to detect one when I conduct rectal examination. I successfully palpated a normal prostate and learnt that a normal prostate is smooth and rounded. Other lessons I gained included helping male client getting in a proper position for rectal examination such as lateral recumbent or standing positions.

Both models were quite helpful and their assistance significantly enhanced the whole learning process. Since the conditions were close to read-world cases, it also boosted my self-confidence as a nurrse practitioner student. The models also encouraged me because by willing to let me examine them without any hesitation, they made me feel as if I am already a professional and can take real-world cases.
