Job Description
In the second part of the job analysis, we will look more into depth on the job position of a lodge manager. The job description of the lodge manager is that is in charge of the overall operation of the organization (lodge, hotel, motel, etc.). Lodge managers are in charge of renting rooms to customers. There duties may vary, but the lodge managers help the owners of the organization keep it afloat. Lodge managers are able to set the rates on the room, they monitor the expenses and the income, and supervise the different departments. In larger establishments, lodge managers ensures that guests on business or vacation have a satisfactory experience within the lodge. Their responsibilities are to maintain a smooth operation of the organization, as well as serve as a point of leadership to the entire stain. Maintain the facilities, and provide a superb level of hospitality that meets the standards of the organization. The lodge manager reports to the general manager and the owners, in which their position helps to facilitate a smooth relationships with supply, food, and furniture vendors. In order to fulfill these duties as a lodge manager, the lodge manager must be able to:
- Direct, organize, plan, and manage the financial and budgeting management of all hotel and lodge services.
- Manage the daily activities of housekeeping, beverage and food operations, and front of house; reservations, concierge, and reception to keep control of front office services.
- Maintain and manage all the lodging facilities, by doing daily inspections and maintaining adequate logs.
- Cooperate and confer with managers of different department managers in helping to coordinate lodge/hotel activities.
- Be in charge of hiring, managing, and delegating staff responsibilities throughout the lodge facilities.
Job Fits Into The Organization:
The overall goals of the organization is to ensure that guests of the facilities have a pleasant time, and treated with the utmost respect from lodge employees. The goals include supplying a welcoming environment for guests and visitors that coincide with the highest standards of service, housekeeping, and meals that meet the expectations for the organization. The lodge manager fits into these goals by maintaining an enjoyable, harmonious, and safe workplace environment for the entire organization. They must lead by example in an enthusiastic and positive manager. Doing so, by maintaining a smooth operation of the ledge, its functions, services, infrastructure, and facilities. The lodge manager must work closely with other department heads in order to create a strong management team, as well as communication and report on a regular basis to the senior management to stay in line with the standards and requirements of the organization. Essentially they must gain a clear understanding of their duties, and make sure they are carried out to the standards needed to be a successful and safe lodge. The lodge manger reports to the general manager, the senior management members, and the owners of the lodge. In return the lodge manager has; department heads including the Sous Chef/Restaurant Chef, Front Office Manager, Guest Relations Manager, Housekeeping/Assistant Managers, Facilities Manager, and Operations Managers.
Unusual/Unpleasant Work Conditions
Being a lodge manager may require several demanding duties and responsibilities that will make the work environment unpleasant. Lodge managers will maybe work around the clock, working weekends and evenings. Lodge managers will have to work hard to please lodge guests, and will have to be on high level of contact with customers and staff. They are responsible for the work of others, and the safety and health of customers and staff. They must move fast and repeated movements, reach, twist, stretch, and bend with their legs, arms, and body. Make adjustments to controls on machines, and focus on sources of sounds of objects. They are required to sit and stand for long periods of times, and determine distance between objects. They will have to focus their eyes to see objects in low lights, and use their muscles in their lower back and stomach to support their bodies. They typically work an 8-hour day, while administering the lodging. In their off hours, lodge managers are called for crises or issues. They can be under a large amount of stress, as well as deal with physical hazards of moving around equipment, but are mostly impacted by the psychological stressors of managing a lodge. The unusual aspects of lodge managers can be dealing with unruly guests, unruly employees, and uncooperative visitors during events, in which authorities would likely be called to take over the situations.
Job Specifications
They must be have leadership potential, and experience in related work. Business skills, in order to budget, and make sure the organization is profitable. Customer-service skills, so they need to display strong interpersonal skills, customer and service skills, be an effective communicator, and maintain positive interactions will all people in the organization. The lodge manager must look for ways to help others, and recognize the nature of a problem. They must be able to change their behavior in relations to their customers and staff. Have an accurate judgment of the costs and benefits to solution possibilities. The lodge managers must have knowledge of managing the ins and outs of the organization. Able to provide special services based on the needs of the customers. Knowledge of the English language. Knowledge of mathematics, especially in the areas of using numbers and statistics. Leadership skills, to ensure a positive and sustainable working relationship with lodge staff, and guests. Listening skills, which helps in active listening to employees and guests, and ensure positive lodge culture. Organizational skills that help keep employees and department on track, budget, and in line with the lodge standards. Problems solving skills that incorporate critical thinking, decision making, and assisting in all aspects of the organization. They must be able to work independent, to make decisions and create ideas on their own. More importantly have a general understanding of the security and public safety knowledge of protecting property, data, and people.
Lodge managers must have the minimal qualifications that are needed includes an associate’s degree, training in vocational schools, or on the job related experience. In some organizations a bachelor’s degree is required to be hired for the lodge manager position. The degree most sought would be in business management or Hospitality & Tourism Management. There are no specific certifications or licenses that are required to be a lodge manager. However, there are hospitality management certificates that can be obtained, as well as certification from the American Hotel and Lodging Educational Institute. For those that achieve the basic requirement of high school diploma, and do not have college experience. Other ways in which lodge manages can qualify includes; vocational training, on-the job related experience working in a hotel or other relevant workplaces. Courses in college, vocational programs, and technical institutes that are required accounting, food service management, and marketing. Computer skills that cover, scheduling, reservations, and billing. Potential candidates can pursue internships and jobs part time in hotels, lodges, and other related organizations. For some candidates that work part-time in hotels and lodges can receive formal training, and elect to be trained in order to be moved up into a full time and higher position. Those that do not have hospitality management training can still be chosen if they show leadership skills and potential working several years in other related work settings.

Management and Organizational Skills Test. It tests for, “an individual’s knowledge and understanding of how relatively complex organizations function as well as knowledge of the competencies and skills required for success in management and executive positions.” (Buros, 2014). The tests provides 12 situations and scenarios in which the individual must excel in: performance management; coaching and development; planning, organizing, and scheduling; problem solving; interpersonal relations and working with others; communications; flexibility; dependability; ethical conduct; and overall performance. These dimensions are needed and beneficial for the position as a lodge manager.
