Webpagesthatsuck.com
When I visited webpagesthatsuck.com, the one thing I was impressed by was the site’s ability to show what not to do when designing a website. I was impressed because the webmaster of webpagesthatsuck, Vincent Flanders, taught by example instead of through detailed diatribe. The article that stood out to me on the site was “The 25 Worst Websites of 2013.” I learned through this list what not to do when designing a site by understanding Flander’s criteria for selecting sites for the list. The main thing I noticed is that he judged site based on their ability to be functional, their ability to communicate to the visitor their purpose, and off course aesthetics. While aesthetics in many ways is more art than science, I did grasp the understanding that there are many top sites that struggle with fundamental aspects of website design like being functional or defining purpose to the visitor, the number one example Flanders points to to prove this is the healthcare.gov.
Coolhomepage.com
I also visited coolhomepage.com. This set provided a selection of templates for designers to use when designing websites. I learned a lot about the diverse ways in which a site can be structured and still be appealing to the eye, by scrolling through the many selections of templates. The most important lesson I think I took from this site was that there is no one standard structure when it comes to designing web pages. A website can basically be anything you can imagine.
Htmlhelp.com
Finally, I visited Htmlhelp.com. The firs thing I noticed was how basic the site was in comparison to the other two sites. I also noticed that the site seemed to provide, very easy to comprehend, support tools for those struggling with HTML. The one thing I found most impressive about the site was its alexa.com ranking. Htmlhelp.com is ranked 17,920 in the United States, while the much more creatively designed and entertaining webpagesthatsuck.com, was only ranked 61,150. I attribute this significant difference in traffic between the two site to the fact that Htmlhelp.com serves a higher and more valued purpose on the internet. The lesson learned here is that flashy design can be sacrificed depending on the value the site provides to the visitor.
List the three website that you visited (as part of step #2) and write 1-2 paragraphs about what you learned about designing Websites using HTML from these three websites www.webspawner.com
The thing I learned about website design from webspawner.com was fundamnetla skills of HTML, like how to make a hyperlink, or center text, constructing and frame or the purpose of a META. This site seems to be a basic starting point to learn HTML fundamentals.
Htmlgoodies.com
On htmlgoodies.com, I learn more advanced techniques, like using HTML5 and building high performance Javascript, and some of the common techniques with responsive web design. It is very clear to me that this site is one that I want to come back to once I have mastered many of the steps from the previous site. Www.w3.org/Markup
This site seems to be a combination of the previous two sites. It’s highly technical. The only thing I really grasped from this site is that there is always more to learn with HTML. The structure was basic in nature but complex in regards to the amount of information presented. Some of the topics on the site included HTML5 specifications, HTML Work Groups, and XHTML.
I really liked the ample supply of information available on the Lebow home page. In fact, the thing I did not like about it was that there seemed to be too much information almost like the page was cluttered. This is one of the main reasons why I replaced tabs in certain sections with tabs from other sections and deleted tabs altogether. I also didn’t like the fact that the tab for social media engagement was located all the way at the bottom of the page and ti was very small. I could not find a sensible place to move the tab that I thought would work, so I just increased the size of it.
The list of changes you made
Removed the “News, People, Video, Events” tabs and replaced them with the Apply, Visit us, Request tabs and deleted these tabs from their original position.
Moved the “For more Information” MBA Admission contact info box to the top of the page where the Apply tab used to be.
Changed the image to a slide show with clickable images leading to the “people” pages that was deleted from the top of the page (this change cannot be demonstrate in the picture).
On the second half of the page, I increased the site of the Facebook, Twitter, and Youtube tabs at the bottom of the page.
On the second half of the page, I deleted the MBA Admissions contact box from its original position.
