Introduction
Managing hyperglycemia requires an understanding of the dynamics of the disease and how it is managed by the adult population. Hyperglycemia, typically known as diabetes, is represented by any number of symptoms that may impact an individual’s overall health and wellbeing. An increase in blood sugar may be attributed to issues such as poor diet, infection, and failing to take the required medications (Cleveland Clinic, 2014). Therefore, education regarding this condition must be provided to patients in order to effectively promote a successful strategy to manage this condition in a successful manner. However, education must also demonstrate a greater focus on an environment in which ethical principles are conveyed and provide further evidence of the needs of this patient population as they move forward in managing the disease at its different stages. A group educational forum regarding hyperglycemia in type 2 diabetes will serve as the focus of this discussion in order to determine how to effectively manage the disease and its symptoms without difficulty, and to also provide an ethical approach to decision-making in order to prevent further risk or harm to patients or to others in their lives.
Body
Hyperglycemia may be highly complicated in many ways and reflects a need for individuals to take the steps that are required to accomplish the needs of a given patient population through education and ethical decision-making. This process enables patients to recognize if they experience any type of impairment and to use good judgment in these cases, such as while driving or in other areas (Cox, Singh, & Lorber, 2013). In addition, nurses must be able to exercise a sound and reasonable approach to treating patients, including the use of holistic measures to accommodate patients as necessary and to provide further support for the needs of this group over time (Bishop & Scudder, 2001). There must be a greater focus on the development of strategies to promote ethical decision-making when hyperglycemia events occur so that patients are properly assessed and treatment is provided in a timely manner to meet all required needs, including emergency situations (Sanuth, Bidlencik, & Volk, 2014).
Most importantly, patients must be provided with the education that is necessary to manage hyperglycemic events effectively and to address other challenges in a timely manner to meet their needs as best as possible. This is an ongoing process that requires further investigation and focus so that there are sufficient opportunities for growth and change among nurses to promote an environment of change and progression towards a more positive health landscape for this population. Nurses treating this population must be prepared to manage the risks associated with their treatment and must also be able to accommodate patients with their skillset, while also considering ethical principles in the process. This reflects a need to make positive and ethical decisions that are in the best interests of patients at all times. Nurses must be prepared to manage these events and to make decisions to improve health, rather than deter from this process.
Conclusion
Hyperglycemia in type 2 diabetes patients creates many difficult challenges with respect to achieving the desired outcomes. This requires an examination of the different events that impact patient care and how nurses must be properly educated in order to address ethical concerns as they arise. This process also demonstrates a need to evaluate each patient’s case individually, to not make any assumptions regarding their care, and to recognize when they possess needs that require immediate attention. This will emphasize an ethical approach to patient care and decision-making that is essential for this population group and for their specific needs.
