Essay

The patient must be admitted in the hospital in the ICU for two days and should be monitored. Based from the preliminary examinations done when the patient was brought to ED, the assessment imposes that the patient is suffering from intussuscpetion. This particular medical condition involves the section of the intestine being invaginated to the other. This means that several parts of the intestine slides into another.

Given that the situation of the patient is not likely life-threatening at the immediate stage that it is referred to at present, it could still be treated through water soluble contrast enema which could be given to the patient upon admission. This approach both helps in the proper diagnosis of the situation while also reducing the obstruction caused by the coiling or the sliding of the intestines. The success rate of this approach is noted to be at least 80% in most cases.

In case of recurrence, it is important to consider surgical reduction. This means that opening the abdominal area where the coil is found should be considered accordingly. The part that has telescoped shall then be squeezed out manually by the surgeon. In case bowel movement is affected by the said surgery, then resection shall be admonished accordingly. Other treatments that could be assumed to have a better impact on the recovery of the patient is the application of laparoscopy wherein the segments of the intestines are pulled apart through forcep operations. Considering these procedures, the patient may need to be admitted within the next two to three days. If observations pertain to better recovery then the patient could be released under the permission of the attending physician.
