I think that management support is important for safety, while it is also important to ensure that safety professionals are doing their job. It is essential to understand the difference between the roles of management support and safety professionals. While it is the role of the safety professional to ensure ideal working conditions for all employees, they can occasionally miss some unsafe procedures. Since it is essential that this does not occur, the management support is useful because it is likely that they will catch errors during their review. This doesn’t mean that the safety professional is unskilled or not doing their job, but occasionally things are missed as a consequence of human error. When an organization has a team of safety professionals working with management support, they are more likely to pick up on these errors and recognize them before there is a threat. While this checks and balances system is essential, it doesn’t necessarily mean that management support is necessary. Rather, the organization could assign safety professionals to review the work of their colleagues to ensure that all issues have been properly addressed. Management support is helpful, but not completely necessary if alternative forms of supervision and guidance can be provided to members of the safety staff.
