Managing for Quality of UPS, Research Paper Example

Research Paper

UPS is one of the best known delivery companies because they are interested in making sure that people’s packages get to them quickly. Because of this, the company organized itself so that it focuses on quality and efficiency, meaning that even though products will get there fast, it will be delivered to the correct person at the correct address. UPS has been successful in this attempt because it has been able to keep up well with modern times. The company uses many computerized items in order to make sure that customers always know where their package is and to make sure that it won’t get lost while it’s getting delivered.

One of the ways that UPS has been able to increase its ability to offer its customers quality is that it has created very effective package tracking applications both online and on mobile devices. While UPS has had an online tracking system for some time now, it has expanded to make easier to use mobile applications that its customers can download. Whenever someone wants to know where their package is, all they have to do is either type in their package number or important information. When they do so, they will be able to find out where exactly their package is in the delivery process in addition to whether it has been shipped or not. This improves quality because it also makes sure that the package isn’t lost and that the delivery team knows where it is at each step of the process. This also makes sure that the package gets to each checkpoint at the expected time (Fortune, n.d.).

UPS has also been able to increase its quality by offering its customers many ways to send packages. While people are more familiar with the UPS Company as a package delivery service by van, the company also uses airplanes to make sure that deliveries from faraway places happen fast. To make this process even better for its customers, UPS has its own airplanes and makes sure that they are always working well, to avoid package delays. This makes it so that when UPS promises a customer that a package will be delivered on a certain date and time, it will happen. The company repairs its own airplanes to improve the efficiency of this goal, improving their quality of service (UPS, n.d.).

The UPS Company is currently considered to have one of the highest qualities for companies in its field. This fact is backed by many statistics. First, the company only loses 1% of its total packages, and has a reimbursement program set up to give money back to the people that this happens to. Second, the company spends a lot of money on its quality control to make sure that they don’t have problems. Preventing these problems makes the company have a better reputation. Lastly, it’s important to consider that on an average day, UPS ships about 15.8 million packages (Foxman, 2012). It is impressive that the company is able to deliver this many packages and keep all of its promises. This is why UPS is said to have high quality compared to other companies in its field, and this is even the case compared to some companies in different industries.
