Wells (2009) reports that healthcare organizations face a lot of recurring challenges of meeting critical stakeholders; payers’, customers’ and regulators’ performance expectations. There is high expectation and also increased volumes of service to the health care facility. This will lead to overwhelming and new labor shortage. It has been reported that the demand for the best talent in health care system is intense and people will choose health care organizations that give them meaningful opportunities so that they can develop and grow in their career.

4 Elements for Strategic Development of Employees in a Healthcare Organization

It has been reported that the ability to develop or attract leadership talent is one of the high performance indicators for a health care facility. The identification of leadership qualities is very important in an organization. This can be done by influencing the other employees to accomplish the goals of the healthcare organization. As reported by Wells, great leaders apply their competencies or leadership attributes through values, ethics, beliefs, character, traits, knowledge, skills and also abilities (2009). It has been reported that for an employee to be a high performing leader, the following are what one should possess: character which means honesty and integrity, personal capability in technical knowledge, problem solving, practicing self improvement and also being innovative, focus on results by establishing goals, and taking initiatives. Sowers, Kevin W. RN, and MSN (2008) reported that the employee should also take the leading change which means one should be able to develop strategic perspectives or connect the organization to the community. A person should also have good interpersonal skills by communicating prolifically and powerfully, by motivating and inspiring others, by building good relationships and also by focusing on teamwork and collaborations. The employees should also be coached and well trained so that they can perform on their own without necessarily being supervised. Spat (2002) suggests that mentoring is also important so that the employees in the healthcare system can achieve their individual goals while still at the organization. Mentoring and coaching are ways of developing the work unit’s in relation to earning more salary and also achieving their goals in the healthcare organization. It is very simple to make the employees the leaders of the healthcare organization and this is by listening to the different views or suggestions employees have about a certain problem or an issue. It is clear that leaders who listen to their employees in turn make the employees listen to them. This is one of the greatest leadership qualities that employees pick up from their leaders and it is easier to work with people who take their time to listen to other staff members.

The Role Succession Planning

Succession planning is used by many healthcare organizations when recruiting, mentoring, retention and also administration activities because it has been discovered that there is a shortage in experienced doctors and healthcare providers in the whole world. This is done so that when there is a shortage of healthcare providers, the ones that are there can take the initiative to be great leaders who can manage the healthcare organization without doubt. Succession planning is often carried out in the healthcare organizations because skilled labor in medical field is not readily available and leaders have to train their employees so that they can provide quality services and also products when the work units decrease in number. Zuckerman (2009) has discovered that retaining knowledgeable personnel is an important factor in succession planning because there are shortages of nurses and also pharmacists.

Employee development and succession planning is very important in a healthcare organization because this helps the organization achieve its set goals while also helping individual employees achieve their goals while working in the organization. An effective leader allows the employees to be innovative and explore their talents in the organizations. Employers who allow this encourage new improved ideas from their work force which in turn benefits the whole organization.
