Mass Media Regimes and Objectivity, Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 276

Essay

When most people are exposed to the news, they could be subjected to the viewpoints and opinions of others, or they are fed stories and images of the worst of the world, more so than the best, it seems. In addition, due to the reach of the Internet and cable television, news is often ridiculed and spoofed in entertainment, which sometimes gives people a distorted view of what is real and what is not. In addition, this casts some level of complacency about the news presented by professionals because people have learned to laugh about even serious issues in the news that are parodied in comedy (Williams& Carpini: 226).In addition, the power of the press has been used for negative reporting, particularly regarding politics, in an attempt by opposing parties to gain popularity as the main agenda, by showing bias. However, many journalists and news organizations are sensitive to accusations of bias. This is most likely favorable among the public that expects news reporting to be objective and free from bias (Williams &Carpini: 3).

To this end, I feel that we are still better off now that we have the opportunity and option to sample all sorts of excitable viewpoints in the news media. Times have changed and globalization has made it possible for everyone to have some type of connection with the rest of the world. I think people are intelligent enough to understand the seriousness of issues, but are still able to laugh at comedic jabs at those issues.
