The research team of Masters and Johnsons, which consists of William Masters and Virginia E. Johnson were basically the first to explore the human sexual relations concerning the treatment and diagnosis of various psychologically and physically formed sexual disorders and dysfunctions. The peculiarity of their studies is special because the studies conducted by Masters and Johnsons took part in the second half of the twentieth century, from 1957 till the 1990s to be exact. They research the peculiarities and problems of female orgasms as well as the nature of male and female sexual arousals.

Masters and Johnson studied masturbation and sexual intercourse through laboratory observation of 382 women and 312 men.
