Mayan Culture and the Rule of Pacal, Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 265

Essay

My research paper will discuss the rule of the great Mayan ruler King Pacal and provide an overview of the Mayan culture during his reign.  King Pacal, also known as the “Sun Shield”, ruled in the extremely violent Mayan city-state for a total of 68 years.  He took the throne at the young age of 12 and continued to reign over the Mayan culture until he passed away at the age of 80-years-old.  Upon his death, the Mayan civilization placed King Pacal’s corpse within a tomb in the year 683.  During his rule within the Mesoamerica time period, his kingdom experienced advancements in language, mathematics, astronomy and architecture.  The strong leadership and guidance of King Pacal provided a Mayan environment that was conducive to learning, progress and advancement.
What were some of King Pacal’s unique characteristics and personality traits?
What obstacles did he have to overcome in order to continue ruling for so long?
What advancements existed for the Mayan culture in the areas of religion, astronomy, and mathematics?

What was the basic structure of the Mayan economic system?
