Mcdonaldization in Society, Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 285

Essay

What evidence do you see of McDonaldization in society today? Do you think McDonaldization is beneficial or detrimental?

McDonald’s today is a booming phenomenon in the economic realms of the world. It stands firmly atop the fast food chain industry, remaining at number one rank for many decades, and from what it seems, more decades to come.

Most can notice the “McDonaldization” of society in America with the impact of a simple hamburger taking not only economic effects, but also affecting social life in general. These affects are directly related to both the consumer and the producer, they are beneficial in terms of providing efficient service as well as predictable control and quality over goods. However, these good qualities also lead to detrimental issues of irreversible values. There are the ecological impacts as well as the overlooked dehumanizing effect leading the public into mistaking quantity for quality.

We can see evidences of McDonaldization not only in the fast-food industry but in how consumers see goods. This can be shown in the example of super markets which replaced the corner-store, and now are being largely replaced by all different kinds of hypermarkets. This is a representation of quantity over quality. The system of healthcare has also suffered this change, making hospital or medical care an impersonal experience. The McDonaldization of society has inarguably a distant reach across America today. With higher education, this can be seen in online multiple choice tests.

McDonaldization proves to be more convenient for society, yet it has very detrimental effect. It provides people with instant-gratification, yet quality has deteriorated. Some may call it advancements in technology or knowledge or even efficiency. Yet, society is still being alluded with the idea of mistaking quantity for quality.
