The economic downturn in South East Asia really started to take hold in 2007 and we are now 2 years ahead.  A great deal of the woes have been attributed to increased aspects of globalization.  They have attributed causation to such items as :-

Economic Interdependence Cross-Border Capital Movements, Rapid Technology Transfer, and “Real Time” Communication and Information Flows.
Challenge to state authority Rise of civic firms, global networks, financial markets and production networks
Emergence of western dominated culture The so called “democracy by the back door” , latest technological innovations exported from the west eroding national identity, culture and the values of the young
Transnational Problems Resolution of which requires international cooperation and no longer under the control of domestic or home government

At the Asia Pacific Conference of 1999 it was  stated that the increased pressures of Globalization on Asia may well increase tensions with the United States.  There is a need for much close collaboration and understanding in what was termed the new “Grand Bargain”.  Asia needs to cease demonizing the USA and the west for spurring on with globalization and the West needs  to ” abandon triumphant rhetoric, and recognize that Asian concern over eroding values and social cohesion is legitimate” (Johnstone, 1999).  There are only two important forums where the USA and the west can influence the South East Asia Agenda.  (1) The Summit of the South East Asia Nations (Asian+3) China, Japan and South Korea and (2) East Asia Summit, the same participants plus India, Australia and New Zealand.  The Asian News reports the interesting dilemma of India and its role in ASEAN (Association of SE Asia Nations). India as an emerging powerhouse democracy finds itself in an unenviable position ”  Undemocratic regimes in India’s neighbourhood are all very hostile to India,” Chellaney observes in a July 6, 2000, interview (p 266). He goes on to note: “It is Taliban in Afghanistan … Musharraf’s military junta in Pakistan and we have China, which is our largest neighbour, a big communist power and you have the military in Burma. So this arc of undemocratic states around India is most inimical to India’s interest. So India would certainly like to see democratic forces in Burma triumph. But until they do triumph, it makes sense for India to establish a working relationship with Burma so that Burma does not fall by default into China’s lap” (Mathur, 2004).

There has been a lot of talk about globalization pushback in the USA news media.  For example since the election of President Obama there has been no action on resuming trade negotiations with Vietnam Economist Stephen Roach blames a lot of the US $800 billion trade deficit on globalization and Americas protectionist values particularly towards China and South East Asia.  Political Columnist Daniel Drezner stated “the pushback against globalization is real,” ” A recent Pew Research Center poll found that 44 percent of respondents thought globalization led to lower wages; just 11 percent thought free trade boosted wages. Likewise, 48 percent thought globalization resulted in job losses for Americans; just 12 percent considered it a job creator  (Pethokoukis, 2007).
