How Well Prepared
Medical professionals respond to crisis situation every day. As a result, student medical workers are being prepared to handle such cases in their medical preparation classes. The Critical Issues in Management class that I have taken has been very influential in preparing me for real life situations that I will encounter in the medical profession. One of the most important factors that I enjoyed about the course is that it focused on current problems and issues that one may encounter in the healthcare field. All members of the class were comfortable and able to voice their opinions honestly. Some of the topics that members of the class brought up were very informative. There were times when former classmates or people who are working in the field even came in to speak with us. They were able to relay real life situations that they encountered and how well the organization responded to the situation. This was very important to me, as well as other members of the class because it gave us a realistic point of view of just how demanding the field we are entering will be. Also, we were given several case scenarios and had to determine what would be the best plan to handle the situation. There were several logical answers to the problem, but after discussing within the class, the professor gave her professional expertise. This allowed us to often look at the situation from a different perspective. Just being able to hear the professor verbally go through the different ways to handle the situation was very beneficial. This allowed me to understand the critical thinking skills that are needed to work well and efficiently under pressure.
Appling What I Learned
There were several things that I learned from the course that I believe will be beneficial to me in the healthcare profession. First, I have learned that flexibility is very important in this field. The course has taught me to work well under various conditions and stress. I know that this will be very important to me because in the medical field situations can change drastically from one minute to the next. Another important lesson I learned was how to delegate duties. In the healthcare field, our job is very demanding. I am a very compassionate person and I know that I will be attached to my patients. However, the professor reminded us that often healthcare worker get burned-out from patient over load. So, the sensible thing to do is to ask for help when you need it and don’t be afraid to talk to seasoned nurses and healthcare workers if you become overwhelmed. Finally, I have learned that the healthcare field is ever changing and you must stay abreast of new and latest research. In other words, great nurses continue to be life-long learners. There is never a point where one can say that I am finished with school. There is always something more to learn that will help you provide the most up-to-date and accurate services to your patients. When patients are aware of this, they become more confident in the services you provide and the organization you work for.
Successful Student
The successful student is one that is accomplishing what he/she sat out to do in school. For me, being a success student means that I am able to maintain a solid G.P.A. while learning valuable tools that I can use to assist me in the health field. Being a successful student means being academically successful. In order to maintain satisfactory grades, a successful student must be prepared and prioritize his/her time wisely. Being a full time student is a tedious task. Being in the healthcare field is an even more demanding task. This requires hours and hours of studying and reading. Consequently, this means less time for friends, family, or fun. In order to be successful, a student has to be dedicated to the call-healthcare workers are called by God. This is not a job for the average person or the faint of heart. Healthcare workers live a life of long work hours, unexpected circumstances that cause them to have to work over, and missing out on family functions and holidays.
Successful Professional
Likewise, being a successful professional is just as tedious and demanding. Being a successful healthcare worker means that you must possess certain qualities. The first and most important is empathy. This is so important because patients want to know that you genuinely care about them. This will help the patient overcome fear and anxiety they may have when they make a trip to the doctor. Next, you must have confidence. When patients see that you are confident they gain confidence in you and your expertise. When a patient sees that you are nervous or confused they will be reluctant to allow you to service them. Another great quality is honesty and accountability. It is important that you know your duties and are accountable for your actions. Errors will be made and when you do make errors confess and be accountable for them. This means that you will work to improve your performance and prevent similar errors from happening to yourself and others. Finally, endurance and flexibility are a must. A healthcare worker must be able to efficiently juggle several tasks at a time. Emergencies and unanticipated crisis can be stressful, but you must maintain a calm demeanor. Healthcare professionals must be alert and provide quality healthcare regardless to the situation. Often, the survival of the organization depends upon the workers. You should be just as kind and energetic with your last patient of the day as day as you were with the first patient.
Conclusions
This course has been a great asset and experience for me. I believe that I have been equipped with what I need to be successful in the healthcare field. The real life hands-on experiences have been priceless. However, the most beneficial aspect of the course has been being able to speak with people who are actually in the healthcare field. These people have been candid and honest with us. This aspect has given me a more objective point of view of the healthcare field.
