Flight Into Egypt

Flight Into Egypt

Description and Style

To the left of the picture is Joseph fast asleep. The writing on the scroll comes from the angel who appeared to Joseph to explain his warning dream “Accipe puerum et matrem eius et fuge in Egitum” (Matthew 2, 13:). This is transcribed as “Take the child and go into Egypt”. The background scenes depict the way to the journey. This paining represents intricate paintings on copper of which nocturnal landscape paintings of which the Moon and the stars are the principal sources of light. The style of the painting is Italian Baroque landscape. The story of the painting is told in the gospel of Matthew. His style was rich in illusionistic classic Renaissance.

Philosophies

Annibale Carracci’s philosophy was that art was depicted from the theme of Gods and governed by Celestial love. The Treaty of Berhick, which would expel the French from Scotland, was signed by England and the Congregation of Scotland. She often expressed view of political distaste through the use of caricature art works. He began painting frescos in the Galleria in 1507. They depict, in idealized human form, love scenes of the pagan gods, derived from the Roman poet Ovid’s fables. In 1585 he and his brother started a school of art named Academia degli Incamminati. His family was very influential in the world of art but he preferred not to use this to his advantage. Many of his pupils went on to become pre-eminent artists of the decades  including Domenichino, Francesco Albani, Giovanni Lanfranco, Domenico Viola, Guido Reni, Sisto Badalocchio and others following his death in 1609.

Description and Style

Claude Lorrain was an artist of the French classical baroque style. He depicted expressive ends with theoretical perceptions within his paintings. “He emphasized the play of cosmic forces, though classical tradition precluded his unbalancing the two to any pronounced degree. His early works reflect the late mannerist style of Tassi and that of the northerners Brill and Elsheimer. (“Claude Lorrain”).

Philosophies

Living in a pre-romantic era he painted a pastoral world of fields and valleys not far from castles. He fed the publics’ desire for paintings through depictions of noble themes of heroes and saints and demigods. He was described as kind, focus, detail oriented and humble by his students. He did not achieve fame from his art works until after his death. That is quite common with most famous artists.

A Watermill

A Watermill

Description and Style

Hobbema lacked the power to capture the majesty of nature as his teacher Ruisdael did. His paintings were of narrow subjects basically windmills and trees around a pool. His works are well represented in English galleries throughout London. It is critiqued that he painted some of his finest paintings at the age of between 12-14. His works are classified as baroque.

Philosophies

He was born in Amsterdam and never left the city except to do a few sketches. He possessed a very traditional outlook on life. “He held a traditional civil service position as wijnroeir, a minor customs official of which his position was to gauge the amount of wine in foreign casks according to Dutch standards.”  (“Meindert Hobbema”).His paintings never lacked detail or substance nor colour or movement. His pictures possessed a sense of serenity to them. “His paintings seem to indicate man’s contentment merely to be alive.”
