Men Still Commit More Crimes Than Women, Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 338

Essay

Even though it is apparent that men still commit more crimes than women, women are committing more crimes than they have in previous years. Scientists have found that there are biological reasons that men tend to be more violent than women. Men, for example, are more likely to become diagnosed with ADHD which reduces their abilities to control impulses. Thus, when men become angry, their physiology causes them to take immediate action rather than carefully considering their options. This is also due to a hormonal response. High concentrations of testosterone are linked to a tendency for individuals to commit violent action and men typically have higher concentrations of this hormone than women. In fact, women only have this hormone in trace amounts.

On the other hand, more women are committing crime due to social reasons. Historically, the actions of women have been repressed to a significant extent. Now that this control has decreased, women have the opportunity to associate with whomever they please. This may not always be the correct choice, as these individuals can display behaviors that contribute to the female’s tendency to commit crimes. Drug use is a major factor that contributes to criminal activity, but it is also important to consider that the rise of mental disorders plays a role in this relationship as well. Individuals that are suffering from a mental disorder and do not receive help are more likely to commit violent crimes. Thus, a combination of reasons contributes to the increase in crime for women. Drug use and violent activity are inappropriate responses to trauma. Brenda Stokes Wilson, for example, reported sensing violent impulses prior to committing the crime, showing that she was aware that something was wrong and that she knew to seek help for it. However, she likely did not receive proper treatment for this mental health issue and as a result, caused the death of innocent people around her. It is important to consider the value of treating mental health in the population in order to reduce crime.
