Mesopotamia: Compare and Contrast, Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 260

Essay

Comparing two different people, in this case the people of Mesopotamia and the  Jews, one can clearly see the main differences about their religions and their religious activities. It should be noted that both religions were exercised and were dominant religions that played an important role in many societies, including the people of Mesopotamia and the Jews that lived close to the Mediterranean Sea.  There are some differences that are very much obvious. One factor, obviously, is that for Jews, the religion had one God and it was based on super -powerful, surrealistic figure who did not live in this world and nobody saw him. In contrast, the religion of people of Mesopotamia is different in a sense that they had several gods.  Gilgamesh, being the leader of the people of that area was constantly contacted  by gods. For instance, he once calls and the child of gods comes out saying,” Then he called to the man Gilgamesh, he called to the child of the gods: ‘ Why have you come so great a journey; for  what have you travelled so far, crossing the dangerous waters; tell me the reason for your coming?'” In the old Hebrew texts no child of gods actually exists.

One other. interesting difference between the people of Mesopotamia and the Jews was that in the case of the former the gods did not promise them  anything, whereas with the Jews God referred to King David saying, ” Your house and your kingdom shall be forever before me. Your throne shall be established forever.” ( Samuel 7:16)
