Midcity Wellness Center, Essay Example

Pages: 2

Words: 450

Essay

It has recently come to my attention that the Midcity Wellness Center has been the recipient of a criminal complaint alleging that the facility is involved in the“unlawful operation (of a) medical marijuana business.” I am writing to you as both a resident of Los Angeles and a patron of this business to express my concerns about his situation. While I understand the city’s position on enforcing applicable law, I believe the law may be misapplied here, and also believe that the desire to close down medical marihuana dispensaries must be tempered with the notion that many such dispensaries provide important services and do all they can to adhere to the rules.

There is no question that some medical marijuana dispensaries fail to follow the laws and guidelines related to their operations. In some instances, medical marijuana dispensaries have served as outright nuisances, attracting problems for residents and other businesses in the area. It should be noted, however, that the Midcity Wellness Center is not one of these problem dispensaries. The proprietors and employees of the Midcity Wellness Center have always taken great pains to adhere to the rules and operate within the confines of the law. This facility provides excellent service, and is an asset to its local community. While some medical marijuana dispensaries do clearly operate as thinly-disguised criminal enterprises, the Midcity Wellness Center is not one of them. I believe it is important for the City Attorney’s office to draw sharp distinctions between those organizations that flaunt the law and those that respect and adhere to it, and to devote prosecutorial resources to closing down the facilities that are most deserving of the City Attorney’s attention.

With these considerations in mind, I implore you to reevaluate your decision to prosecute the Midcity Wellness Center. As a resident of the community served by this facility, I can personally attest to the Center’s professionalism and the valuable contribution it makes to its clients and to the surrounding region. Midcity Wellness Center serves as an example of how all medical marijuana dispensaries can and should operate. By allowing it to continue operations and focusing instead on those facilities that have tarnished public perceptions of the medical marijuana industry, it is my view that the City Attorney’s office would be sending a positive and powerful message to local residents that legal action will be reserved for those facilities that deserve it, while those that respect the law will be afforded similar respect. I am grateful for the opportunity to patronize such a professional and valuable facility, and it is my fervent hope that you will drop the charges against the Midcity Wellness Center. Thank you for taking the time to consider my request.
